  READINGS IN BUDDHIST TEXTS
Generally reading will be restricted to the Buddhist texts designated here as Required Textbooks, and we will be focused on reading these works closely and carefully, with critical discussions to follow.
Sutta-nipāta is considered one of the earliest Buddhist texts and is widely read within the monastic communities of South and Southeast Asia.
As this is a “second-tier” course with a prerequisite, the research paper should reflect a fairly detailed look into the Buddhist topic of your choice, using multiple sources, and with a proper bibliography and footnotes or endnotes as necessary for citation and/or explanation.

The Jataka is a huge collection of fables framed as previous incarnations of the Buddha, many of which either have parallels or derivatives in western folklore and literature.

The manuscripts date from, most likely, the first century A.D., and as such are the oldest surviving Buddhist texts, which promise to provide unprecedented insights into the early history of Buddhism in north India and in central and east Asia

Although nothing is known of their provenance, their attribution has been confirmed by the University of Seattle's Professor Richard Salomon, one of the world's greatest scholars of Kharosthi - a script derived from the Aramaic alphabet that was restricted to a small area of India.

 Gandhāran Buddhist Texts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One more manuscript, written on birch bark in a Buddhist monastery of the abhidharma tradition, also in the 1st or 2nd century CE, was acquired from a collector by the University of Washington Libraries in 2002.
The Gandhāran texts are in a considerably deteriorated form (their survival at all is miraculous), but educated guesses about reconstruction have been possible in several cases using both modern preservation techniques and more traditional textual scholarship, comparing previously known Pāli and Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit versions of texts.
Scholarly critical editions of the texts are being printed by the University of Washington Press in the "Gandhāran Buddhist Texts" series, beginning with a detailed analysis of the Ghāndārī Rhinoceros Sutra including phonology, morphology, orthography, paleography, etc.

Although many versions of the Nikaya school texts were written in Sanskrit, the only complete canon to survive is that of the Theravadin school, which preserved the texts in the Pali language.
The Mahāsanghika Mahāvastu is said to be a vinaya text, but rather than dealing with rules it is an extended biography of the Buddha which it describes in terms of his progression through ten bhumis, or stages.
