Topic: Buddlejaceae

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Asteridae -- Spring 1999
The core families are the Buddlejaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Globulariaceae, Myoporaceae, Gesneriaceae, Acanthaceae, Pedaliaceae, Bignoniaceae and the Lentibulariaceae.
The Buddlejaceae general lack well defined stipules, however, and possesses intraxylary phloem, both features that firmly removes the taxon from that order.
The supposed relationship of the Oleaceae with the Buddlejaceae, and thus the placement of both in the same order, can be argued either way citing numerous sources of evidence (see Takhtajan, 1997: 450).

Abstract - An investigation of two species of Nuxia (Buddlejaceae) showed that this genus is characterised by the presence of the eight-carbon iridoid glucoside unedoside and/or its derivatives.
Abstract - Polypremum procumbens (Buddlejaceae) was found to contain sorbitol, cornoside, salidroside and conandroside.
From Tetrachondra hamiltonii (Tetrachondraceae) was isolated sorbitol, cornoside and verbascoside.

With over 90 species distributed in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, Buddleia is the largest genus within this smaller and monophyletic Buddlejaceae s.str., yet only two species have been examined using molecular data.
To further test the monophyly of the Buddlejaceae s.
Maximum parsimony analyses of the combined data matrix yielded 12 most parsimonious trees (length 419) after successive weighting.

To further test the monophyly of Buddlejaceae and to elucidate phylogenetic relationships among species of Buddleia and segregate genera, we examined nucleotide variation from the trnL-F region of the plastid genome among 23 species of Buddleia, two species of Nicodemia, one species each from Emorya and Gomphostigma, and eight outgroup taxa.
Maximum parsimony analyses of the combined data yielded 12 most parsimonious trees (length 419, CI = 0.969) after successive weighting.
Our results indicated strong support for: 1) a monophyletic Buddlejaceae s.

I've seen Poverty Bushes in real life, in Santa Barbara's Francesci Park, but have only seen Myoporums in photographs.
Studies on the chloroplast gene ndhF suggest that Myoporums and Poverty Bushes are in turn closely related to butterfly bushes, the Buddlejaceae.
