Just over a half century ago, on this date in 1952, film censors reminded Columbia Pictures that Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr were to remain clad in bathrobes at all times during the filming on Blowhole Beach in Oahu of their big love scene for the film From Here to Eternity.
Ironically, because producer Buddy Adler didn’t like the way the sequence was playing in rehearsal, with the two stars mingling while standing up, Lancaster suggested instead the famous alternative of a horizontal clasp amidst pounding surf, which the actor had worked out on his own with Kerr earlier in the day.
All these years later, the emblematic romantic scene is notable not so much for the fact that, according to Look Magazine, it was the most heavily engineered love scene up to that time, spanning three days and roughly 100 crew members.
