Every buddy cop cliché rears its ugly little head during the film, as the search moves at an agonizingly slow pace.
When the cops are investigating a murder, no one cares because the script is too jumbled to make any sense of what is going on from scene to scene.
The film is good for a few laughs as you and your friends get together and poke fun at the ineptness of the script and the laziness of the actors involved.

Buddy cop film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Buddy Cop" genre of films are actions films with plots involving two men of very different and conflicting personalities who are forced to work together to solve a crime and/or defeat criminals, sometimes learning from each other in the process.
These films sometimes also contain a variation on the old good cop/bad cop motif, in which one partner tends to be "kinder" and more understanding but the other partner is a streetwise, "old school" policeman who tends to break (or at least bend) the rules.
Films that do not specifically involve two cops, but otherwise have many of the characteristics of a Buddy Cop film, are sometimes included as examples of the Buddy Cop genre, or are called members of a larger genre of Buddy films.

This film's biggest downfall is not in the talent of its cast (which includes two favorable performances from Rene Russo and William Shatner), but in it's willingness to be adequate.

Part of this confusion is simply the style of the film — on the surface it has all the characteristics of a glistening teen idol effort wrapped in mounds of sugary sweet tooth decaying taffy — but underneath the pretty gloss was a bizarre plot with a real sense of sadness and loss.

Showtime [2002] Shaking Through.net: Movies: Review
Showtime never loses sight of its principal role as a featherweight action film, which is both its blessing and, to a lesser extent, its curse.
The premise is simple enough: Veteran police detective Mitch Preston (Robert De Niro) is a taciturn loner, a blue-collar Everycop, forced to pair with Trey Sellars (Murphy), an overly-ambitious patrolman and aspiring actor given to catch phrases and show-bizzy nicknames (referring to himself as "Ice Trey").
But even when it's clicking in that first hour, it never pretends to be anything more than just a cute buddy film, the puzzling expectations of highfalutin' media types looking for substantive satire aside.

Los Angeles, Feb 20 (IANS): Bruce Willis would be starring as a troubled cop in "16 Blocks" for his buddy, "Lethal Weapon" director Richard Donner.
The film tells the story of a New York police department officer who's forced to take a happy, but down-on-his-luck witness 16 blocks from the police station to 100 Centre Street, although no one wants the duo to make it, reports the Hollywood News portal.
The story, whose filming will start April in Toronto, is said to be a redemptive tale for the characters who are polar opposites - the cop, a dark guy with a heart attack waiting to happen and the witness, a 14-time loser with a sunny outlook.

Despite somewhat disappointing theatrical success Red Heat is also one of the better buddy cop films that came out consistently at that time, and a far step up from the ones we’ve seen recently.
Most of the plot would seem predictable to audiences today after being attacked with at least three buddy cop films a year since the release of Red Heat in 1988, but despite the lack of surprise the film will still be entertaining for anyone that loves the action/comedy genre.

About the best thing that can be said for `Showtime' – a throwaway cop buddy comedy starring Robert De Niro and Eddie Murphy –; is that it demonstrates that an inferior script can be at least partially overcome by first-rate performances.
Despite the fact that there are a number of funny moments in the film, too many of the scenes fall flat both as comedy and as action drama.
Yet, the film betrays its own theme by itself indulging in all the inane shoot-em-up and car chase scenes it is supposed to be satirizing (the scenes are not exploited for comic effect, which might have lent some much needed satirical bite to the proceedings).

While the humour is occasionally too culturally specific to work for gwailos, a more serious concern here as far as PC types are concerned is likely to be the moment when Tiger beats up Marydonna causing her, with predictable effect, to fall truly, madly, deeply in love with him.
There is also, however, a degree of unintentional comedy supplied by the then-hip, now horribly dated 1980s styles on display, with our heroes seemingly kitted out in Crockett and Tubbs' hand me downs and the bad guys delighting in flashing their brick-sized mobile phones.

This was aimed to attract the adult male audience for the humour of James Belushi along with the female and younger audience for the canine inclusion, adding to the “aw” factor.
The sad thing is that due to the age of the film, this humour doesn’t quite work as well as it did back then, so rather than many belly laughs please don’t expect more than the odd giggle.
