Glass family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seymour Glass (1917-1948): The eldest son of Bessie and Les.
Buddy Glass (1919-Present): The protagonist in "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters," and the narrator of "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters" and "Seymour: An Introduction." It is revealed in the latter that he wrote at least two stories collected in Nine Stories: "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "Teddy".
Buddy was very close to Seymour before Seymour committed suicide in 1948, and he narrates most of the Glass stories in his attempt to connect with his dead brother.

SparkNotes: Franny and Zooey: Zooey - Part 1
Buddy is the oldest living brother of Franny Glass and Zooey Glass.
In it, Buddy complains that their mother, Bessie, nags him to get rid of the phone that he keeps in a New York apartment and get a phone in his remote home at the college.
Buddy writes that he and Seymour had decided that the best thing in life to pursue was not knowledge, but "no-knowledge." Instead of setting Franny and Zooey on a path of trying to learn everything, they hoped to explain, through their religious lessons, that knowledge was not the most important thing.

GradeSaver: ClassicNote: Franny and Zooey Study Guide - Major Themes
Glass is invisible, and though the Glass children store away many secrets (Buddy, especially, seems to know more about Seymour's suicide than he lets on), they also lack privacy - Bessie is constantly barging in on Zooey, and Buddy has gone so far as to not install a phone in his house.
Glass is also reflective; self-aware prodigies, they are all victims of their own egos and narcissism, especially Franny and Zooey, who are physically beautiful to boot.
Glasses also hold water, and water is an important association with Zooey, who bathes, shaves, sweats, used to have fish, and even steps on a newspaper picture of a fish.

Seymour Glass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seymour Glass was the oldest of the children in J.
Seymour's closest family member was his younger brother Buddy Glass, who is the narrator of most of the stories about Seymour.
Buddy always greatly admired his elder brother, even identifying him as the most intelligent and the "undefeatable champion talker" of the group.

The New York Review of Books: Justice to J.D. Salinger
The Glass family apartment is at once a faithfully, almost tenderly, rendered, cluttered, shabby, middle-class New York apartment and a kind of lair, a mountain fastness, to which Salinger's strange creations retreat, to be with their own kind.
At the beginning of "Zooey," Buddy (who again brashly claims authorship of Salinger's work) describes it as a love story, and it is true that the affection the family members feel for each other is an almost palpable presence.
The frank pleasure Bessie Glass takes in the sight of her son's body is represented as the breaching of a boundary, as "something perverty" (in Holden's term).

He also resents the way Bessie and the others revere Buddy and Seymour for their wisdom, though he understands that they are wiser than he is. He counsels Franny on the ways of spirituality, especially of Jesus Christ, but he frequently does so in an abrasive way that alienates her.
Bessie Glass: Bessie is the mother of the Glass children, a former vaudeville dancer alongside her husband, Les.

 The Stories of JD Salinger
In fact, Buddy Glass tells us that he has been the narrator of all of Salinger's stories from the beginning.
Buddy Glass not only mentions a Curtis Caulfield, who sounds suspiciously like the Holden of some early Caulfield stories, but is himself a Gallagher.
It is our intention to address the Glass sagas in the near future, but for now, our concentration is to do a bit less in the hopes of doing it well.

J.D. Salinger Revisited by Gail Jarvis
The Glass family was composed of seven extraordinary children whose superior intelligence was showcased on a weekly radio program appropriately called: "It’s a Wise Child." These seven siblings were a far cry from the seven von Trapp children whose high spirits liven up The Sound of Music.
In the first of the Glass family stories to appear in print, A Perfect Day for Bananafish (1948), Seymour Glass, a young veteran of World War II and seemingly on the verge of a mental breakdown, is vacationing with his wife in Florida.
While he is re-reading a letter from Buddy, Zooey is interrupted by his mother, who prevails upon him to revive Franny, his despondent younger sister, who now alternates her time between sleeping and repeating her prayers.

Buddy looked apprehensively at the gustatory nightmare before him and said, "Oh well--Hakuna Matata." He closed his eyes and drank deeply, almost draining the glass completely.

 Hapworth 16, 1924 - by Dan Geddes
Lest we doubt that seven-year-olds typically write 20,000 word letters, we quickly recall that this is the same Seymour Glass who entered college at 16, earned his Ph.D. at 21, and put a bullet through his brain at 31.
He is characterized as eccentric, intelligent, and perhaps too fond of children, but we hear nothing of his superlative spiritual powers, nor of the Glass family as such.
Both stories in fact feature Buddy; and, eerily, it emerges that one of most salient conflicts in late Salinger is the struggle between the dead Seymour and his admiring brother Buddy--both of whom bear striking resemblances to Salinger--for primacy in the reader's imagination.

As Buddy Glass, the compulsively garrulous chronicler of the Glass family might admit, it is very, very, very true that a large segment of the U.S. young is hung on old Buddy and his six weird brothers and sisters.
Unlike the generation of the '20s and '30s, both of which were in revolt in one form or another against the bourgeois family, Salinger's quiet ones are in revolt against nothing but the "phoniness'" in human life itself, she points out.
Rejecting its patents of superiority, Miss McCarthy sees the Glass family as "a terrifying narcissus pool." And it is on the troubling question of Seymour's suicide that she sternly calls to order the little acrobats in Seymour's moral gymnasium.

 Hapworth 16, 1924 Summary / Study Guide
Although Seymour's letter constitutes almost the entire story, other Glass family members must be noted, particularly his five-year-old brother and fellow camper, Buddy Glass, who receives considerable mention.
Seen also as a forty-six-year-old writer, Buddy introduces the reader to the world of his late brother, in a headnote to the letter, dated May 28, 1965.
He explains that his mother, Bessie Glass, sent him the letter after he had informed her he was working on a story about a very significant party he and Seymour, Bessie and Les (her husband and the father of the five Glass children)...
