Buddy Jewell won the Crown as the first champion performer of the USA Network country talent show, “Nashville Star.” He added jewels to that crown by scoring a big hit with the first release from the self-titled debut album he was awarded when he won the competition in 2003.
Now, Buddy is set to add another “crown” for the Jewell chest, a sophomore album titled, Times Like These, that should break him on out as one of the few “contest winners” to hit big and continue to succeed beyond their grand prize popularity.
Buddy attributed that to his 10 years of demo singing where he formed enough friendships with top writers and publishers to get a shot at better songs than the average newcomer, plus he had a chance to add some of his own original songs.

Country singer Buddy Jewell's meteoric rise caused him to be tagged an "overnight sensation," but looking back at his ten years in Nashville obscurity, Jewell considers himself a modern-day Rip Van Winkle.
A native of Arkansas, Jewell's earliest musical memories are staring into his parents' radio looking for the "little people" that he thought were living inside.
Four years of touring with the unsigned band was enough and Jewell moved to Dallas, TX, to star in a gunfight show at the Six Flags theme park.

Buddy Jewell : Times Like These - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
With Jewell in his forties, the show illustrated that it could help break somebody who didn't appear to be a conventional new country star, while giving the audience an emotional bond to the winner, since they felt that they helped give this guy the chance of a lifetime.
Jewell sings sweetly and sincerely, which is enough to make this pleasant mood music, maybe for office work or a lazy afternoon, but not enough to give Times Like These a distinctive personality.
However, to his legions of fans, Buddy Jewell already has a distinctive personality because of his starring role on TV -- they know his history, they like him, they're rooting for him.

Buddy Jewell won the first Nashville Star competition in 2003, propelling him to a number one country album later that year, as well as two singles that peaked at number three on the country charts.
As a professional demo singer, he had technical skills and a pleasing voice, he was an attractive everyman, and (best of all) he was middle-aged, the kind of singer who wouldn't get a break in the music biz unless it was a stroke of luck, like a televised talent contest.
His debut was a success based entirely on his personality and back story, since his voice, as nice as it is, doesn't stand out from the crowd -- unless it's given a big showcase, as it was on Nashville Star.

His self-penned "Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey's Song)" made history as the highest-charting debut single by a new artist since Wynonna's "She Is His Only Need" (1992), partly because of its sweet parent-child dynamic, but also because Jewell knows how to emotionally connect with.
