The amazing part about this Atlanta garage man was that he beat the rough whiskey boys and their high-tailed cars with his own creations, then went on to be a NASCAR founder, a Grand National season champ and a hero of the renaissance of road racing in the United States.

The first NASCAR competition held outside of the United States was in Canada, where on July 1, 1952, Buddy Shuman won a 200-lap race on a half-mile (800 m) dirt track in Stamford Park, ON, near Niagara Falls.

In 2000, Economaki received the NASCAR/Federal Mogul Buddy Shuman award, presented annually to the person judged to have gone above the call of duty in service to NASCAR Winston Cup racing.
Economaki is also the recipient of NASCAR’s Award of Excellence, which was presented to him by NASCAR President Bill France in 1990 at the annual NASCAR awards banquet at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
His latest honor came in late 2001 when he received the International Automotive Media Council Lifetime Achievement Award.
