Even today, the film is acclaimed for its original, futuristic sets, mechanized society themes and a gigantic subterranean flood - it appeared to accurately project the nature of society in the year 2000.
The Flash Gordon films were remade in 1980 (with Sam J. Jones as the title character and Max von Sydow as Ming, with music by Queen), and in 1997 as the animated Flash Gordon: Marooned on Mongo.

Adventure films are set in an exotic location or different historical period, from the middle ages through the 19th century.
In the hard-boiled detective film, crime becomes a dark metaphor that is symptomatic of what is wrong with society, rather than simply a single aberration from the norm.
Film noir was primarily made in a cycle during the 1940s and into the 1950s, but includes work made in previous and subsequent years that invoke the feel and mood of classical film noir.

The origins of what is now considered the traditional buddy film can be found in the late '50s and early '60s, as America was facing its most difficult trials and tribulations, racially speaking.
The result was the resurgence of the buddy film; or more appropriately, what I like to call the "affirmative-action action film." Hollywood was able to include "safe" fl characters that didn't threaten the sensibilities of its white audiences in Topeka.
If anything, they do more damage to the furtherance of fl film: As long as buddy films continue to capture the dollars of fl audiences, there is no need to produce films that cater to the needs of those audiences, who are often starved to see images of their people on the screen.

 Buddy Clark Articles
Buddy Clark was one of many fine singers from the thirties and forties who have not received all the acclaim they truly deserve.
Buddy Clark appeared on film in RKO's production of "Seven Day's Leave" in 1942 and his voice was heard in several Hollywood feature films, most notably, "Wake Up and Live" in 1937, "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now" in 1947, "Melody Time" in 1948 and "Song of Surrender" in 1949.
Buddy Clark was only thirty seven years old when he died, but more time than that has elapsed since his untimely demise and his many recordings continue to provide pleasure and enjoyment to all who hear them and will for years to come.

 Susan Isaacs: Friends, Friends, Friends
The numbers are nowhere near those of the male buddy film, probably for the simple cultural-historical-sociological-stupnagel-sexist reason that women are considered neither as important nor as interesting as men.
Whether female buddy movies focus on the relationship between two women, or the dynamics of a group, or treat sisterhood as an important secondary theme, the women in them are almost invariably brought together by predictable, traditional concerns: men (the procurement and retention of same); children; and, occasionally, careers.
The film is a rare one in the genre because it depicts two women whose friendship transcends the usual concerns of men, children and careers.

But bear with me. One of my favorite tasks on the first day of my introductory film class in the January term is to share a list of what I consider to be the year's best films.
As I have matured as a film viewer, I have been drawn to international cinema, independent films, and American films that provide three-dimensional characters facing complex and ambiguous moral dilemmas.
I want films to challenge me, confront me, encourage me, and remind me of the uncharted depths of the human psyche. So from my perspective, then, perhaps lists like these can be regarded as a reflection of the failure of American cinema to embrace challenging themes and idiosyncratic characters.

This might be a genre that we haven’t studied (horror, science fiction, action, martial arts, buddy films, musicals, detective stories, gangster films, slacker films, journey films, etc.), a particular star, or a particular director.
For at least three of the films, look up critical responses to it, and include a discussion of those in your response cards (which will, in those three cases, turn into brief response papers).
For example, if you’re presenting journey films, you might read a book made into such a film (such as TheWizard of Oz) or a piece of literature that uses the same quest pattern (such as The Hobbit or The Odyssey).
