Budgie drew heavily on the likes of Cream, Led Zeppelin and Sabbath, combining some crazed metal guitar wizardry with Shelley's high-pitched vocals, often compared to Rush's Geddy Lee's.
I regard them as the pinnacle of their career.I then purchased the first two albums "Budgie" and "Squawk" and wasn't disappointed.Their 5th album "Bandolier" introduced some funk elements to their sound and in my mind was the last real classic Budgie album.

Budgie's sound can best be described as a peculiar hybrid of RUSH meets Black Sabbath, Showcasing heavier-than-hell metal riffing intertwined with gentle acoustic, almost jazz-like passages.
Although the group's compositions are sometimes lengthy, Budgie never comes across as being self indulgent or pretentious because their "tongue in cheek" humor shines through like a beacon...informing the listener that none of us should take any of this stuff too seriously.

Budgie's fourth album catches the band in a stage that, I guess, could be called 'indecisive artistic semi-stagnation': the formula of their previous albums has been worn to the bone, yet somehow the members are still talented enough to let some kind of 'second breath' open at the very last minute.
One thing Budgie never really felt uncomfortable without throughout an entire decade of their recorded existence was a fourth member, particularly not a fourth member who'd come on board with the exclusive aim of playing cheesy synthesizers.

When I joined the band I'd inherited a big fl Pearl kit with heavy heads on it, like Remo CS Black Dots, and that was the Banshee drum sound I had kind of adopted--"thud thud thud thud." I'm not saying it was bad, because Kenny Morris, who I had replaced, was a good drummer.
Plus, with a band, like with the Banshees, a lot of your ideas are focused in a certain way, because you know you are going to pass them around to the other members of the band, and they're going to come out of some sort of filtration system.
