Active in commerce between Chad and Nigeria, the Buduma raise cattle whose very large and hollow horns serve as flotation devices that permit their owners to "herd" them in the lake itself.
Kouri economic activities resemble those of the Buduma; however, the absence of polders along this part of the lakeshore has led the Kouri to confine farming to small plots around their villages.

The Buduma tribe, which lives in the Lake Chad basin, herds cattle with the particularity that their horns are rather voluminous, allowing (so it is said) the cattle to float easily in the water.
The white specks in the foreground are seashells, evidence that water once covered the ground on which the cattle are walking.

In Peru, Heyerdahl had become acquainted with the use of small reed boats on Lake Titicaca.
Excavations on Rapa Nui had uncovered images of what he believed were three-masted reed boats, and this led Heyerdahl to speculate whether such vessels, apparently known in ancient Egypt and still constructed by the Buduma people from Lake Chad, could have crossed the Atlantic.
His 1969 voyage from Morocco in Ra I proved that a papyrus ship could survive ocean conditions for a long time, though its stern threatened to disintegrate after covering 3,000 of the 4,000 miles to Barbados.
