Buekorps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Buekorps (literally "Bow Corps" or "Archery Brigade") are traditional marching youth organizations in Bergen, Norway.
Though the structure and ceremony of the Buekorps has military roots, the brigades are active in various other ways, ranging from physical activity and play to charitable work.
The buekorps have their official season from May through the summer, but are most active during spring, with Norwegian Constitution Day on May 17th as the high point of the season.

 Buekorpsene i Bergen - Content
A BUEKORPS (literally Bow Corp or Archery Brigade) may, basically, be described as groups of boys who take to the streets of Bergen each spring and march to the beat of drums, flying their flags and sporting their uniforms.
To understand how the BUEKORPS came to be, and why they have existed in their present form for almost a century-and-a-half, we need to look at the history of Bergen itself: Up to the 1880´s most Norwegian towns, including Bergen, had their own Citizens´ Guards.
Ardent BUEKORPS fans and supporters in Bergen claim that the survivors are those who accept´ no parental interference with internal affairs; and that the autonomy of the boys´ own leadership is what it is all about.

Buekorps is a special organization in the sense of it being run solely by youth and children.
In a buekorps, the youth learned to organize, both themselves and others, they learned to make desicions and to agree with the majority - even if they might have other opinions.
The membership of buekorps was voluntary, - none were obliged to stay there, the difference being obvious to school, which you had to attend.

Bergen's "buekorps" are quite unique --- no other city in the world is known to have anything similar, and the members of these "buekorps" are boys, aged 9-21.
Each "buekorps" got "officers" and "soldiers", and each shaped a banner with a symbol and the name of the "buekorps" on.
Back in the old days, the different "buekorps" fought with each other with their bare hands -- but these days, the "winner" is the "buekorps" with most members and the best formations.

Norwegian Constitution Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the municipality of Asker, outside Oslo, the children gather outside the residence of the throne heir at Skaugum Estate in the morning (giving the Prince and his family time to attend the parade in Oslo later in the day).
Bergen has its own traditions for the parade, including comic troupes, various local organizations, a children's parade, and the buekorps.
In addition to the children's parades the streets are filled with young and old, turning out in festive attire, and vendors selling ice cream, hot dogs, and lately, kebabs.

There are 15 buekorps in total, (12 boys only, 2 girls only and one mixed) there were only boys only buekorps untill asomething like 13 years ago when the first girls only buekorps was founded.
Many don't like girls in buekorps, and refuse to aknowledge them (they say it interferes with the tradition) I think it is sad that they can't accept girls in buekorps, since the tradition is dying out, and the girls have just the same right to make a buekorps as the boys have.

A BUEKORPS (literally "Bow Corps" or "Archery Brigade") may, very superficially, be described as groups of boys who take to the streets of Bergen each spring and march to the beat of drums, flying their flags and showing their uniforms.
There is, of course, much more to it than meets the eye, and the citizens of Bergen regard the BUEKORPS movement as being as much part of their home town as are the seven mountains or the rainy weather.
Recognizing the folkloristic value of the BUEKORPS, the local authorities and the tourist organizations make use of show platoons and drum beaters (some of whom are brilliant drummers) to underline the very special, living traditions of Bergen.
