Buell graduated from West Point in 1841 and was a company officer of infantry in the Seminole War of 1841-42 during which he demonstrated his remarkable administrative abilities and a marked proclivity for enforcing discipline.
Buell aided McClellan in organizing the Army of the Potomac and was sent, in November 1861, to Kentucky to succeed Sherman in command after the latter had buckled under the responsitility and requested of McClellan that he be relieved.
Buell firmly believed that the Union should stand, and he was loyal to the principles of the United States and opposed to slavery.

The Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation was established in 1962 in order to support his charitable interests, which included the education of architects, research into catastrophic illnesses, and programs throughout Colorado to prepare young people to live healthy lives and contribute responsibly to the community.

Buell first raced a prototype of his bike, still using the mostly-stock Barton engine, in summer of 1982 at AMA National on the Pocono Speedway.
Buell did so, but the shipment was delayed such that he missed the opportunity to make full use of this new equipment and knowledge for the upcoming 1983 racing season, which delayed the development of the engine somewhat.
