The Treaty of Buttes des Morts decrees that the Yellow Banks at the bend of the Wisconsin at Plover is the dividing line between the land of the Ojibwe to the north and that of the Menominee to the south.
A slim majority of county voters cast ballots in favor of moving the county seat from Plover to Stevens Point, prompting the city to give $10,000 to the county for the construction of a court house and jail, the first stone buildings of size in the county.
Portage is the only county in Wisconsin to raise over one million bushels of potatoes; the 1.08 million bushels are valued at $426,146.

 EARLY HISTORY OF BUENA VISTA
Buena Vista had played its role in logging off the pine, in settling the country, in educating the children, in providing a church for all denominations, and in fulfilling the dreams of those who suffered the hardships of pioneer life.
To the left of the portage is a small pond, connecting with Lac des Morts, and between this and Hill Lake is a low swamp, through which the waters flowing north and south of the dividing ridge must connect in times of high water.
Whatever went on in other parts of the county, the relations between Buena Vista and the Red Lake Band seem to have been good; certainly they were with J.W.Speelman, who did not object to their portaging over his land from Lake Julia to Little Turtle.

It indirectly refers to the battle of Buena Vista which was fought in 1846 during the Mexican War and at the time was considered as famous a victory by the Americans as Waterloo by the British.
They came to Portage County, put a claim on a piece of land located on the road coming from the south, erected a shanty where they opened a tavern, a hotel for those days, and named it Buena Vista.
The Town of Buena Vista is in the outwash plain of the last Wisconsin glaciations and the western part was at the northern end of the glacial lake.

As of last week, the Wisconsin DNR had received 40 prairie chickens that were released by STCP and the Wisconsin DNR on the Buena Vista Grasslands Wildlife Area in Portage County.
The second part of the plan is that the Wisconsin DNR is trying to secure more property that will eventually link prairie chicken populations in central Wisconsin together so that there can be a natural interchange of birds to keep genetics strong in the future.

WTA wanted to put a world-class shooting range on the Buena Vista Marsh in the southwestern corner of Portage County but ran afoul of those who saw it as a threat to wildlife, especially the threatened prairie chicken, and a disruption of quiet country life.
The Buena Vista Marsh is the biggest, and one of the last, strongholds of the threatened prairie chicken in Wisconsin, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages thousands of acres there for the species.
Kent Hall, retired biology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, represented the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology and said the grasslands on the Buena Vista Marsh are important for the well-being of a mix of bird species.

It takes a lot of land to support even this small number of birds, and approximately 12,000 acres of land on the Buena Vista Grasslands of southwestern Portage County are managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to provide the needed wide horizons and habitat for prairie chickens.
In addition, prairie chickens can be found in outlying grasslands from the Medford area of Taylor County southeast to the Leola grasslands in Adams County particularly on the state wildlife areas known as Mead, Dewey, Paul J. Olson and Buena Vista.
By then, their urgent call for habitat protection prompted private groups like the Dane County Conservation League and the Society of Tympanuchus Cupido Pinnatus to purchase over 12,000 acres of land that was subsequently leased to the Wisconsin Conservation Department to establish a grassland management program.
