Ibrahim Ferrer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born at a dance in San Luis, near the city of Santiago de Cuba, Ferrer's mother died when he was 12, leaving him orphaned and forcing him to sing on the streets to earn money.
It was not until almost 40 years later, with the release of Ry Cooder's Grammy Award winning Buena Vista Social Club recording in 1999, that Ibrahim Ferrer's talent as a bolero singer would become widely known.
The youngest member of the Buena Vista Social Club, Ferrer still toured internationally in Europe in 2005, and released his second solo recording, Buenos Hermanos, in 2003.

One of the many unforgettable musical moments on The Buena Vista Social Club album is “Barbarito” Torres’ laúd solo on “El Cuarto de Tula.” The laúd is a 12-string instrument of the lute family, emitting, especially on its high register, a piercing, metallic tone that is perfect for fast, single-note improvising.
Buena Vista albums have topped the charts everywhere from Germany to Japan, and in his native England, the artists are treated like royalty when they arrive for concert dates.

The wistful irony of this story is that the club at the mystical heart of the music and the Wim Wenders documentary that PBS now presents no longer exists.
The Buena Vista Social Club, the album and the film is the story of a remarkable re-living of the classic era of Cuban popular music, the resurrection of musical forms and personalities that have wielded an extraordinary influence over Western music.
Arguably, Buena Vista is the crowning achievement, thus far, of the "world beat" era in both critical and commercial terms.

Since nobody seems to know where the original Buena Vista Social Club was located (92-year-old, cigar-puffing string player Compay Segundo pokes around a Havana neighborhood for it in one amusing sequence), the film serves as a sentimental journey back into its heyday.

The frail but still brilliant Ruben Gonzalez, the brazen Omara Portuondo and the spritely and unmissable Ibrahim Ferrer were the named stars; they've all released "solo" albums since the original album appeared and their energy and vibrancy continues through all of them.
Gonzalez, helped onto the stage in front of an emotional audience who were for the most part looking honoured to be in the same room as the great pianist, was helped to his piano stool and then let his fingers fly all over the grand, quick-witted and brilliant despite his obvious discomfort.
Fresh from his collaboration with Damon Albarn on the Gorillaz album, Ferrer is clearly revelling in finally being a star after decades of obscurity and offered us Dos Gardenias as a highlight of the evening; a more moving performance would be difficult to envisage.

Ry Cooder Bio - Buena Vista Social Club
By March of 1996, when Ry Cooder arrived in Havana for what he thought would be sessions for a guitar-based tropical album featuring legendary Cuban and Malinese players (fate would have it that instead, Buena Vista happened), he'd already spent three decades on one of American music's most unusual and eclectic journeys.
This is far different from the enduring American and European pop trait of the last few decades of appropriating the exotic, which, of course, makes of the whole endeavor a narrative not at all about who's being appropriated but rather all about who's doing the appropriating.
In the brief introduction to The Buena Vista Social Club album, Cooder writes, "I felt that I had trained all my life for this and yet making this record was not what I expected in the 1990s.
