Buff-breasted Sandpiper breeds on dry, sloping tundra, or in areas of tundra with a combination of dry, elevated areas and lower, wet patches.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper is the only species of North American shorebird that exhibits a lek mating system, in which males defend territories for the sole purpose of performing displays to attract females; females do not receive any resources from males, nor do males aid in parental care in any way.

 Submission No:364
A juvenile Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was considered however this bird had: no white eyebrow, no white under the bill, too dominant a buff colour and a very distinct fl eye”.
Committee members struggled with the brevity of the report, commenting that it is difficult to rule out an aberrant individual of another species, flight details and age characteristics were not available and there is an absence of photographs or field notes from additional observers to help support the claim.
In fact the prominent fl eye, buff face and breast and bare part colouration is highly suggestive and furthermore Sharp-tailed Sandpiper’s would have moulted out of juvenile plumage long before this date.

 Arctic Refuge: Buff-breasted Sandpiper
Male "buffies," as some people refer to them, may work awfully hard to curry the favor of the females, but when it comes to later responsibilities, they have it easy compared to male Spotted Sandpipers, for example, who have to do serious incubation duty after the eggs are laid.
This means that when they finally do master flight and build up their fat reserves the scarcely month-old juvenile sandpipers must migrate south on their own, negotiating the direction, distance and dangers of the long journey without parental guidance.
In addition, their nesting habitat in the Arctic is on the drier coastal terrain where industrial facilities tend to be constructed.
