Buffalo Creek in Logan County has had its share of coal mining tragedies.
After a rain soaked impoundment dam of the Buffalo Creek Coal Company collapsed, 138 million gallons of fl waste water cascaded down the narrow hollow.
This is the story of the Buffalo Creek Flood Disaster of 1972.

Besides the statistic, the flood left countless scars on the survivors and the citizens of West Virginia that cannot be counted or described (Gerald Stern, 1976).
Officials of Pittston Coal claimed the flood was "an act of God", as they argued that there was nothing wrong with the dam except that it couldn’t hold all of the water "God poured into it." Public outrage followed this comment, and the catastrophe was to undergo years of investigation and speculation.

 Buffalo Creek Flood Disaster
Buffalo Creek winds it way down thru these communities and empties into the Guyandotte River at the edge of the town of Man.
The wall of water that came rushing down Buffalo Creek contained coal and mud and was said to have been 30 feet in height.
It was reported in the local paper that he had been in the flood waters and was holding his two-year old daughter when the water "ripped" her out of his arms.
