PETA Media Center > Recent News Releases : PETA ASKS BUFFALO ZOO TO FOLLOW LEAD OF PROGRESSIVE ZOOS AND RELINQUISH ...
Buffalo, N.Y. This morning, PETA dispatched a letter to Buffalo Zoo Director Donna Fernandes, urging her to follow examples set by the Detroit Zoo and the San Francisco Zoo by sending the Buffalo Zoo’s elephants to a warm-climate elephant sanctuary that offers conditions more similar to those of an elephant’s natural habitat.
PETA points out that captivity in general, and the cold Buffalo winters in particular, are detrimental to the physical and psychological well-being of the elephants, who spend several months each year confined to cramped, barren, indoor enclosures, where they develop ailments that are virtually unknown to elephants living in wild herds.
In addition, the Buffalo Zoo still practices an outdated, circus-style form of elephant management that consists of dominance and the imposition of fear, both of which are established by the barbaric use of bullhooks.
