South Carolina Governor John Rutledge had been warned of the pursuit and had ridden ahead along with Colonel Buford's supply train.
By early afternoon on the 29th the leading elements of Tarleton's force had caught up with Buford near the Waxhaws on the border of North and South Carolina, but his column was strung out for several miles and many of the horses had been ridden to death.
At the Battle of Camden, South Carolina on August 16, 1780, Lt. Colonel Tarleton's Legion was sent in to clean up and cut down fleeing militia units.

The spoils of victory were Buford's artillery, ammunition and baggage.
Cornwallis eulogized this savage act of Tarleton; Stedman, one of Cornwallis's officers, and a historian of the war, wrote: "On the occasion, the virtue of humanity was totally forgot." Tarleton received the special favor of Lord George Germain, for the cold-blooded massacre; and "Tarleton's quarter," became the synonym for cruelty.

Initially, Childs was hoping to have access to the tortoise so she could bring her to local schools to show the students.
