Software bug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other bugs lead to security problems; for example, a common type of bug called a buffer overflow may allow a malicious user to execute other programs that are normally not allowed to run.
A bug in the code controlling the Therac-25 radiation therapy machine was directly responsible for patient deaths and in 1996, the European Space Agency's US$1 billion prototype Ariane 5 rocket was destroyed less than a minute after launch, due to a bug in the on-board guidance computer.
One cause of the Therac-25 radiation machine deaths was a bug that occurred only when the machine operator very rapidly entered a treatment plan; it took days of practice to become able to do this, so the bug did not manifest in testing or when the manufacturer attempted to duplicate it.

Bug ID: 5060485 The scope of a class type parameter is too wide
The JLS3 Draft 8.1.2 Generic Classes and Type Parameters reads: The scope of a class type parameter is the entire declaration of the class, except any static members or initializers of the class or of any classes nested within it, but including the type parameter section itself.
Therefore, type parameters can appear as parts of their own bounds, or as bounds of other type parameters declared in the same section.
The type parameter should be shadowed, or the shadowing should be illegal (need to check the JLS).

deseretnews.com | New bug type? DNA may tell   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The mission: To determine if the wingless bug that looks like a cross between a cricket and a praying mantis is truly the first major new group of insects found in 88 years — a claim made by scientists in the online edition of the journal Science.
Sequencing the bug's DNA could show it is simply a species of an already established order, says Michael Whiting, a BYU biology professor who is supervising the study.
To cross-check the bug's DNA against already-known bugs, Whiting and graduate student Matthew Terry are now examining three genes extracted from the inch-long bug.

During what was then a pre-safe-computing era, the "Love Bug," as it came to be known, became one of the first mass-mailing worm outbreaks.
The Love Bug employed a clever type of social engineering that took advantage of human nature to circumnavigate any virus protection -- in this case, delivering a letter with ILOVEYOU in the subject line, usually from a name the victim recognized.
Thus, in a rapidly multiplying environment, the bug was often sent to someone known to a first victim with a second potential victim wondering why he or she was being sent a note avowing love.

It may not happen on a slower computer like a 486 or when the type library is saved to a slower storage medium like a floppy disk drive or a network drive.
If the type library generator is running on a fast computer and there are more than 256 typeinfos in the type library, more than 256 typeinfos could be written per second.
A workaround to this problem is to limit the number of typeinfos in each type library to 256 or less.

Diagnosing Java Code: The Impostor Type bug pattern
One common symptom of an impostor type bug is that many conceptually distinct types of data are all treated in the same (and incorrect) manner.
As a rule of thumb, suspect this bug pattern whenever there is a mismatch between the conceptual type of data and the way it is handled by your program.
Although the compiler would still catch type misspellings, and the types of objects could not be changed, we are again using an if-then-else block to dispatch on the appropriate type.
