The Bugatti Type 13 was very sophisticated for the day - its engine was an overhead cam design, for instance - and it provided Bugatti with the first in what would become its legendary success in racing.
For example, the Type 35 was fitted with a gem-like 2-liter, 8-cylinder engine with a single overhead camshaft operating twin intake valves and one exhaust valve per cylinder.
In addition to the signature Bugatti radiator, the Type 51 used the tapered rear body and thick-spoke wheels over huge finned drum brakes that gave the vehicle its classic racecar countenance.

For the first time, the Bugatti Type 57 was presented at the Paris automobile-exhibition in 1933.
With this new car type the factory wanted to end the variety of types and shorten its range - a decision which was absolutely necessary for surviving the consequences of the economy crisis.
The time the Type 43 with its single-camshaft-drive has been successful was over and followed by the Type 55 equipped with the succesful two-camshaft motor of the Type 51.

Type 51 is basically a Type 35 with a supercharged double over-head cam engine based on the new Type 50 engine.
One source says only three Type 51 (1930-34), and around fifteen Type 51A (1932-36) and 51C (1933) where made, while another says that 40 of the Type 51 where built.
The latter figure may include Type 35, Type 37 and occational Type 39, that where converted to the engine specs of the new dohc engine and received a new 51xxx chassis number by the factory.

The Type 51 series succeeded the famous Type 35 as Bugatti's premier racing car for the 1930s.
Unlike the dominant Type 35s of the prior decade, the Type 51 (and later Type 53, Type 54, and Type 59) were unable to compete with the government-supported German and Italian offerings.
The engine was lowered for a better center of gravity, and the frame was lightened with a number of holes drilled in the chassis.

This highly detailed image, with its backdrop of the 1921 French Grand Prix, shows not only the Type 35 but also it's successor the Type 51, introduced in 1931 and winner of 5 Grand Prix that year.
Particularly associated with the Bugatti Type 51 that year was Louis Chiron who won the Monaco Grand Prix in this car, with two other Type 51s in third and fourth positions.

When the flag dropped at 1:30 pm it was the Bugatti’s that led the field, although the cars were known to have poor brakes.
With 16 Bugattis in a field of 23 cars, the Monaco Grand Prix in 1931 was pretty close to being a single-make race!

In 1995 it was in a 1970 Mini Cooper S, in 1996 it was in a 1967 Porsche 911S and this year we campaigned a 1926 Bugatti Type 35B.
Part of the modification was to replace the four cylinder Type 37 with an eight cylinder supercharged Type 35B.
This was and still is a common conversion as both the Type 37 and 35B are almost identical except for the engine.

Pole position was secured by Julian Majzub's Type 35B Bugatti with Charles Dean second in the Type 51 Bug.
Dean overtook Majzub for the lead on lap 1 and the pair continued to race hard thereafter until Majzub hit the tyre wall at St. Devote, sustaining a light injury to himself and significant damage to the front of his car.
Ed Davies reired on lap 2, one of the other Type 35 Bugattis completed nearly half a lap with flames emitting from beneath the car, whilst its driver gamely drove on until engulfed by smoke.

From a remote area of the Limousin, Balsa did not make any impression in racing until after World War II when he acquired a Bugatti Type 51 and was quite competitive in French national events.
When the Bugatti was no longer competitive he built a BMW-engined Formula 2 special and showed well before trying his hand at the wheel of a Jicey-BMW in which he finished third in the GP of Cadours, an event which was overshadowed by the death of Raymond Sommer.
He went back to his BMW Special in 1951 and 1952 and took part in the German GP that year at the Nurburgring, retiring after six laps of the race.
