Material World: Becoming HIV: disease as agency
Initially it was thought that this agency took place physically only at the individual level (transformation of the HIV negative bugchaser) whereas agency at the collective level (acting upon society) took place only symbolically (with the bugchaser representing ‘outside’ society).
The idea of the body as a political or religious battleground is present in the bugchasing/giftgiving discourse where the agency/power present in an infected individual is considered to be ‘demonic’.
Bugchasers and giftgivers essentially play on the language of immunology, now part of popular discourse, which represents the cancer cell or HIV virus as a volitional agent (Napier, 2003).

Material World: Notes from the Field Archives
Bugchasing is the desire for, and active pursuit of, HIV infection; giftgiving is the attempt to infect others with HIV.
The bugchasers, during the ritual, are considered to be both feminine (in their behaviour and in the ‘bottom’ (insertee) role they take during sexual intercourse) and female (where maleness is defined as the ability to act upon and transform another).
Bugchasers are said to be ‘impregnated’ by the masculine and male giftgivers when they are infected.

Bugchasing (or Bug chasing) is a term, invented in the 1990s, stemming out of a subculture of gay men wanting to become infected with HIV.
Bugchasing has been viewed with disdain from many in the gay community as a self-destructive activity.
Bugchasing has, more recently, been taken more seriously by medical health promotion bodies, such as the Centers for Disease Control, which hosted a workshop on the topic, hosted by Dr Michael Graydon of Carleton University, Ottawa, at the 2004 National STD Prevention Conference.

 Bugchasing - meaning of word
Whilst doubts have been raised about the existence of the phenomenon, various gay websites (such as Gaydar) have chat rooms devoted to bugchasers (sometimes known as ''seekers'', looking for ''"gift givers"''), who are looking specifically to have unprotected sex with HIV-positive men, and to become HIV+ by receiving ''"pozcum"'' in a ''"fuck of death"''.
It is thought that some men wish to become infected with HIV because they feel guilty (or even left out) because many of their friends are HIV-positive or because they feel fatalism about becoming HIV-positive and want to stop worrying about when they might become infected ordinarily.
Many gay men, particularly seropositive gay men, look down on bugchasers with disdain, as being delusional or simply not understanding that modern antiviral therapy is incredibly expensive, can still have painful and unpleasant Adverse effect (medicine)s, and does not cure or ultimately stop the progression of the disease.
