Topic: Bugonia

  Weird Words
Bugonia - is the myth or mistaken belief or misapprehension that bees swarm on carcasses, or form hives in the dead bodies, or are spontaneously generated by the rotting meat.
In fact, the maggots are known as rat tail maggots because of the long appendage at the end of the body, which is actually not a tail, but rather a breathing tube necessary when the maggot has burrowed deep into the rotting and liquefying meat.
Presumably, the myth of bugonia arose from observations of bodies of dead oxen, infested with maggots and crawling with newly matured drone flies.

 Pilobolus, Esprit de Spore
Pilobolus the dance troupe had goals just as ambitious, and for more than 30 years, the troupe has remained remarkably fertile, creating a body of repertory based on its unique weight-sharing and partnering skills honed in a collaborative environment.
"BUGonia" brings the Pilobolans back to their spores, so to speak.
Chase explains the word she coined to name her newest duet: "It's a biomorphic creature that definitely hearkens back to our early roots." Those roots include rubber-limbed flexibility, tensile strength to lift and carry partners every which way, and a sense of attachment to the earth as dancers give into the unforgiving tug of gravity.

In Chapter 15 B. examines the cultural typology of the bee in the ancient world (giving a very thorough examination of bugonia) and contrasts it with those of the moth and the wasp.
B. concludes that the bee was the symbol of the rebirth of the just soul and that Virgil's use of bee similes made explicit use of this symbolism.
Despite Aristaeus' status as a non-culture hero in Virgil, he nevertheless accomplishes a similar function: he introduces bugonia to the world.

The Independent Weekly: The grindstone/treadmill dance
In its favor, BUGonia isn't as kludgy as last year's opaque, tech-obsessed retelling of the Orpheus myth.
Wendall Harrington and Zachary Borovay's stage-sized projections of the natural world are exquisite, and the pod-like casing Renée Jaworski and Jenny Mendez create at one point follows suit with appropriate whimsy.
As is the case with too many recent company works, BUGonia serves best as a work for children, or an introduction for those who've never encountered Pilobolus before.

Review: Pilobolus pulsates with fun, creativity (printable version)
The troupe was consistently enjoyable as its members bent, twisted, popped up and down and engaged in occasional cartooning.
Two pieces on the program are of 2005 vintage — “BUGonia,” which had its premiere last month, and “Aquatica.” “Aquatica” engaged the dancers — Mark Fucik, Andrew Herro, Renée Jaworski, Matt Kent, Jenny Mendez and Manelich Minnifee — in a series of swimming-like scenes as the individuals explored different ways of moving together.
In “BUGonia,” Jaworski and Mendez gracefully climbed up and down long pieces of fabric in imitation of a “whimsical creature that is part plant and part animal,” according to the program.

BMCR-L: BMCR 00.07.24, Morgan, Patterns of Redemption in Virgil's Georgics
Morgan confines himself largely to the story of Aristaeus, which forms the last third of the fourth Georgic and tells of the origin of bugonia, a technique by which the ancients believed new bees could be produced out of a slaughtered ox.
By way of the expression caesis...iuvencis, which occurs in 4.284 and 2.537, Morgan sees the killing of the ox which the method of bugonia requires linked to that which had put an end to the golden age.

The Bugonia is examined as Aristaeus' reply to the sacrificial codes of Prometheus, which brought about the separation of man from god.
His identification with Aristaeus is argued on the basis of three comparisons: firstly, on Aristeas' similarity with Prometheus as it emerges through the similarities of pseudo-Aeschylus' Prometheus Vinctus and Aristeas' epic about the Arimaspeans.
Secondly, on Aristeas' association with Egypt and magicians; Vergil significantly suggested Egypt as the place that the Bugonia was practised while a combination of the traditions of Aristaeus and Aristeas survives in late literature.

Several erroneous beliefs, superstitions, and myths have evolved from the mimicry existing between the drone fly (Eristalis tenax) and the honeybee.
Most curious is the "bugonia" myth, which is an ancient belief that honeybees may arise from animal carcasses, especially dead oxen or cattle.
The development of these bee-resembling flies on putrefying flesh must be the basis of the story.
