Buick Rainier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Buick Rainier is a mid-size SUV from General Motors.
Introduced for 2004 to replace the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Rainier is the first truck sold under the Buick marque (the unibody Rendezvous might also qualify) since the 1920s, and is the first body-on-frame V8-powered Buick since the 1996 Roadmaster.
Most of the Rainier's body styling is a direct transfer from the 2002-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada, with a new front fascia bearing a resemblance to other Buick models.

Auto Reviews | 2004 Buick Rainier
When Buick executives tested the "Rainier" name -- the moniker for the brand's big new five-passenger sport utility vehicle -- it reminded women of the glamorous ice-princess actress Grace Kelly and men thought of Sir Edmund Hillary, the explorer who was one of the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
The Rainier gives Buick another critical product in a growing arsenal of vehicles designed to lure younger buyers and keep the General Motors Corp. division from suffering the same death sentence as its lame-duck sibling, Oldsmobile.
Rainier's base 4.2-liter I-6 engine, which makes 275-horsepower and 275 pounds-feet of torque, is a match for the 4.7-liter V-8 engine on the Lexus, which only has 235 horsepower and 320 pounds-feet of torque.

The Buick signature is immediately recognizable upon entering the cabin with bright Buick embossed chrome sill plates, a silver foundation on the instruments accented with green needles, and the rich tones of the dark walnut woodgrain instrument panel.
Rainier’s refinement is further enhanced by its best-in-class body stiffness with a 23 Hz overall rating that is comparable to world-class car structures and some 25 percent better than typical vehicles in this category, providing optimal isolation from road vibrations and noise.
Rainier also is equipped with Bilstein shocks, 17-inch wheels and premium Michelin tires, all of which contribute to its superior stability and road command characteristics.

2007 Buick Rainier - Ratings & Reviews - Dan Jedlicka - MSN Autos
The large—and occasionally sporty—full-size Buick rear-wheel-drive sedans mainly built from the 1950s to the 1970s were loved by many older motorists for their comfort, roominess, and performance.
The 2004 Rainier probably would be appreciated by Harley Earl, the flashy, legendary 1920s-1950s head stylist for General Motors, who is portrayed in Buick television commercials.
Buick expects 30 percent of Rainier buyers to get the V8, which offers good towing capability (up to 6,700 pounds) to Buick's line for the first time since the 1996 Roadmaster.

The new, 2004 Buick Rainier is a more sound-insulated and cushioned-ride version of the mid-size SUV that parent company General Motors Corp. has been selling since the 2002 model year as the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada.
Buick officials confirmed that their dealers had been clamoring for an SUV in order to better meet the needs of today's American buyers who have been turning away increasingly from cars in favor of SUVs and SUV-like vehicles.
And truth be told, the Rainier's starting price was $650 less than the top-of-the-line Envoy SLT five-passenger model at the start of the 2004 model year.

Because Buick is a more upscale GM brand targeting consumers less likely to engage in extreme off-road activity, the Rainier does not have, nor can it be optioned with, the low-range gearing and other equipment designed for serious off-road duty and available on other GM SUVs.
Buick has been playing up its "QuietTuning" system in all of its vehicles, which is meant to improve the sense of refinement and sophistication inside the cabin by reducing interior noise and vibrations.

Thanks to the Rendezvous sport-ute, we're already accustomed to the unlikely notion of a Buick truck, so the arrival of this Rainier SUV is devoid of culture shock.
That's because the Rainier really qualifies as a truck and is distinctly more rewarding to drive than the minivan-based Rendezvous—particularly when the Rainier is equipped with a V-8, as was our tester.
Some of the weight difference noted above is attributable to the Rainier's extra cylinders, but a lot of it can be chalked up to the acoustical material crammed into the fire wall, roof pillars, and doors, as well as the new laminated glass employed for the windshield and front side windows.

Rainier doesn't even offer an extended-wheelbase version like the TrailBlazer EXT and Envoy XL; and that's fine with us, because the stretch-model Chevy and GMC fall short of the standard trucks in handling and stability, while failing to match the space efficiency of GM's full-size Tahoe and Yukon SUVs.
