Buick V8 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another Buick "400" engine was a member of the 400/430/455 family and was produced from 1967 to 1969.
It was the standard engine on the Invicta, 1959-66 Electra, 1962-66 Buick Wildcat, 1963 Riviera and 1965 Riviera (the 64 and 66 Riviera models had a 425 in³ engine with a single 4 barrel carb.
Originally intended for 180 in³ (2.9 L) displacement, Buick was designated by GM as the engine design leader, and decided to begin with a larger, 215 in³ (3.5 L) size, which was deemed ideal for the new "senior compact cars" introduced for the 1961 model year.

Buick Straight-8 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Buick began consolidating its lineup in 2005, replacing the Century and Regal with the LaCrosse, and the LeSabre and Park Avenue with the Lucerne in 2006.
It appears Buick may be preparing to abandon this styling cue for a new waterfall grille, as seen on the Buick Velite concept car from 2004 and the Buick Lucerne introduced for the 2006 model year.
The Buick V8 engine, nicknamed the "nailhead", became popular with hot-rodders in the 1950s and 1960s, because the vertical attachment of the valve covers, in contrast to the angled attachment of other V-8 engines, enabled the engine to fit into smaller spaces while maintaining easy access for maintenance.

 [No title]
Although Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac also designed V8 engines (see list of GM engines), it was Chevrolet's 350 in³ small-block that became the GM corporate standard.
The 327 in³ (5.4 L) V8, introduced in 1962, was bored and stroked to 4 in (102 mm) by 3.25 in.
The engine's physical dimensions (oversquare 4.00 in bore and 3.48 in stroke, 102 mm by 88 mm) are nearly identical to the 400 hp (300 kW) LS2 engine of today, but of course much has changed.

 Buick Spin-On Oil Filter Conversions
The oil filter on these engines is not directly mounted to the engine block (like a Chevy V8), but is instead mounted to a small adaptor that is in turn bolted to the engine block.
The engine block for a 1959 or 1960 Nailhead is close enough to the earlier engines that the factory oil filter adaptor from those two years can be used to mount a spin on filter to the earlier engines.
Pretty much every Buick V8 engine from the 1959 364/401 Nailheads, through the 400/430/455 engines, and to the last Buick 350 engines in 1981 uses the same oil filter mounting.

If too small an engine is used for the work to be done, it will operate at low vacuum for longer periods and use more gas than a larger engine that would not be working as hard.
Engine and vehicle management computers are now a major part of modern automotive systems, and therefore, a significant concern when doing a conversion.
These engines have been popular choices since the mid-sixties, and because they are so familiar, the information and parts required to swap them are more widely available.
