 Sheffield Botanical Gardens History
In 1996 a partnership between the Town Trust (owners), Sheffield City Council (managers), F.O.B.S. and the University of Sheffield made a bid to the Urban Parks Programme of the Heritage Lottery Fund, for complete restoration of the entire Gardens - buildings and plantings.
He broadcast gardening programmes on BBC Radio Sheffield, and with the staff organised popular tours and demonstrations in the Gardens; these were complemented by the shows and exhibitions of the many local specialist societies.

Southampton Canal Society - Newsletter Archive November 1996
The IWA feared that, without lottery or similar funding, insufficient investment would be made to maintain the 161 buildings and structures of historical and architectural importance, in British Waterway's ownership, along the canal corridor.
The reclassification of this canal has only been made possible through a commitment of financial support by Sheffield City Council and we understand that the Department of the Environment are unwilling to reclassify other waterways unless similar financial commitments are made in respect of them.
Though roads have been built on the canal bed in at least two places, and we found one long dry section, the lack of good lock gates seems to be the biggest physical problem.

Protecting Sheffield's historic parks and gardens
The demise of the resident park keeper and reduced maintenance have led to the redundancy of historic buildings such as park lodges and to increased vandalism to buildings and other structures.
The only sites in Sheffield on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens were the 1830s Sheffield Botanical Gardens and the privately owned Oakes Park, an 18th century landscape park on the southern edge of the City.
Public parks are not immune from threats to their historic character due to changes in the ways in which they are used and maintained.

 British Life
Together with English Heritage the company has produced the first ever Architectural Heritage Survey of the canal network, with a photographically recorded analysis of all its waterways buildings and structures from locks and pumping houses to cottages and tunnels.
In contrast it has also carried out a number of town centre and urban canal regeneration projects in cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, and the Limehouse Marina in east London.
For British Waterways, management and conservation of the canals involves a complicated struggle to balance leisure potential with preservation of the natural habitats of rare species of birds, fish and plant life.

Sheffield City Council - HISTORIC PARKS AND GARDENS SUPPLEMENTARY PLANNING GUIDANCE
Gardens cannot themselves be listed but garden structures can be Listed as Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest and thus protected in their own right.
The private gardens are not open to the public but many contribute to the visual character of the surrounding area and are often appreciated by a wider public than their owners or occupants.
There may be pressure for regeneration schemes for parks which may fail to take account of their historic character, either through lack of knowledge and awareness, or because this character is seen to be incompatible with the needs of present day uses and maintenance regimes.
