	Builth - LoveToKnow 1911
		St Mary's in Builth, took its name from the ancient territorial division of Buallt in which it is situated, which was, according to Nennius, an independent principality in the beginning of the 9th century, and later a cantrev, corresponding to the modern hundred of Builth.
		Its castle, built probably in Newmarch's time, or shortly after, was the most advanced outpost of the invaders in a wild part of Wales where the tendency to revolt was always strong.
		The town was governed by a local board from 1866 until the establishment of an urban district council in 1894; the urban district was then made conterminous with the civil parish, and in 1898 it was re-named Builth Wells.

		BUILTH, or LLANVAIR-YN-MUALLT, a market-town and parish, the head of a union, and anciently a borough, in the hundred of Builth, county of Brecknock, South Wales, 17 miles (N.) from Brecknock, and 170 (W. W.) from London; containing 1203 inhabitants.
		The lordship of Builth descended, together with the lordships of Brecknock and Hay (the latter in right of his mother), to William, son of Philip de Breos, upon whose subsequent attainder they became forfeited to the crown.
		Llewelyn fled towards Builth, crossing the bridge over the Wye, which he caused to be demolished, before the arrival of his pursuers, who were, consequently, compelled to return to a ford eight miles lower down on the river, where they effected a passage.

	Builth Castle
		That Builth Castle was once a mighty Edwardian castle is almost as impossible to comprehend as a human walking on the Moon.
		By the 1240's masonry structures were established at Builth; however, it was as the result of Edward I's initial campaign against the Welsh in 1277 that Builth's modest stronghold was refortified and transformed into a formidable fortress.
		In the early 1400's, Builth survived an assault by Owain Glyndwr and remained in fair repair into the Elizabethan Age, when it was finally destroyed and the masonry used as building material for the expanding city.

		Originally this castle was a motte and bailey castle built several years after the Norman Conquest by Philip de Braose, one of William the Conqueror's Norman followers.
		The castle was built on high ground in the town of Builth in the Welsh Marshes overlooking an important crossing of the River Wye.
		Although there is not much to see at the castle now it is possible to visit the site and walk over the mounds and ditches.

		The chief scribe was one Hywel Fychan ap Hywel Goch of Builth and his hand has been identified in several other Welsh manuscripts, including in the White Book of Rhydderch where the original scribe had left a space.
		There is a close correspondence between some of the texts in the Red and White Books (for example, their versions of the 'Mabinogion' and the Triads) and it is generally held that they derived independently from a lost common archetype.
		There is a heap of stones there, and one of these stones placed on the top of the pile has the footprint of a dog on it.
