Topic: Bujingai

  NTSC-uk review > PlayStation 2 > Bujingai
Bujingai begins with a stunning intro; the player is dumped straight into a fight with multiple enemies, and then left to play around with the controls briefly.
Shooting itself in the foot somewhat though, Bujingai gives a player a rating depending on how they perform in terms of swordsmanship, speed and other variables, yet this rating is only given for the first time you complete a level, as it's possible to return to previously completed levels once they have been cleared.
Bujingai's boss battles are by far the most epic sections, which mainly involve the player using the parry ability to the extreme.

While Bujingai's short length and predictable enemy AI are major drawbacks, the title's aesthetic excellence and addictive visceral action make it a satisfying title for fans of the genre.
Bujingai is set several hundred years in the future after a devastating attack by evil forces has killed most of the human race.
Bujingai's animation is likewise impressive, with the characters moving smoothly throughout each level.

Where Bujingai succeeds where those others fail is first by being astonishingly pretty, and second by having the lightning-fast style required to emulate a real wirework action sequence, yet still remain playable by humans.

Bujingai: The Forsaken City (PlayStation 2) Review
Bujingai could be described as Otogi on crack, combined with the likeness of a Japanese pop idol (Gackt, who looks extremely badass in my opinion) with more flash then a Pink Floyd lightshow, and some RPG elements.
The simple combos of Bujingai are cake to pull off, yet the the dynamic wall running, "Crouching Tiger flying", and magic repelling tactics create much more interesting things further in the game.
Overall, Bujingai: The Forsaken City is greater then the sum of its parts.

Bujingai places you in the role of Lau Wong, an immortal martial artist who engages an old acquaintance in an epic struggle between humanity and the demon race.
Bujingai is extremely straightforward in its organization, progressing from stage to stage in a linear fashion, as the story drives forward revealing Lau’s past and developing the present conflict.
Bujingai does feature some creative design in a few levels, such as the trek for souls in the bamboo forest and one of the later stages requiring skillful application of wall jumping, yet most of the stages are straightforward in their design.

Bujingai seems to be trying to be POP SOT in the platforming department, but only half heartedly.
If Bujingai ever gets a sequel I will be surprised if they don't make something more of the run-of-the-mill fodder, so that you can really test your skills on better quality opponents without having to force yourself to go beyond button mashing when the game doesn't require you do anything else.
Bujingai is a good game, but there are too many better games already available on PS2 and Xbox for this to be any more than a nice little stop gap between AAA titles.

Bujingai's real hitch lies in it's over-the-top combat system, which will have players soaring around in mid-air, flailing their blades in a mad rage, slicing through enemies like they were nothing...
Although it's a tad on the short side and a bit repetitive after a while, Bujingai is definatley one of those titles that's worth picking up simply because of it's straightforward approach to the genre.

True to its cinematic roots, Bujingai has players conjuring magic, walking on walls, gliding in the air, and wielding two powerful swords in an effort to wipe out a supernatural threat pervading the game's seven action-packed stages.
The story takes place in the twenty-third century, a time when the majority of Earth's population is decimated in the quest to find an energy source that's at least as powerful as a cup of Tim Horton's coffee.
It should be noted that everything in Bujingai feels film-like, from the graceful motion-captured moves, and sweeping cut scenes, to the over-the-top swirls of light and cascade of sparks that punctuate each swing or clash of steel.

Inspired by Hong Kong cinema, Bujingai: Swordmasters brings martial arts fantasy to life in a high speed third person action adventure which tells the story of Lau Wong and Rei Jenron.
At its core Bujingai is a hack-n-slash title with plenty of Hong Kong movie inspired presentation to keep you busy but if you like a deep story this isn't the game for you.
Bujingai: Swordmaster is a decent enough hack-n-slash game but the story is very limited, it's also a very short game and won't take much more than ten hours to complete even for the most amateur gamer.

Bujingai: The Forsaken City - Reader Review - GameFAQs
Fortunately, "Bujingai" is not limited only to Gackt's feminine demeanor; it has many other qualities that make it stand above the average hack and slash department.
I could far more easily compare "Bujingai" to the acclaimed "Shinobi" or "Otogi", simply because it's focus on aesthetic beauty overrides it's demand for fast-paced action (and because of the familiar settings these three games share).
Personally, the only aspect I think "Bujingai" rules in when compared to "DMC" is the fact that the camera always manages to stay much closer to Lau than it ever did with Dante.

To most Euro-casuals, the prospect of replaying a basic button-basher for hours on end to try and keep a single combo going for the duration of a level is something akin to having teeth pulled, yet our Eastern friends have no problem filling their days by trying to cap a combo of 16,000 hits.
Well, yes and no; the thing is, if you are looking for a misty-screened button-cracker that requires little in the way of thought to run through it then Bujingai could be exactly what you are looking for.
So while it's unlikely to change anyone's life, and will probably sit in the average game collection for about a fortnight before being traded in for something with a bit more bite to it, Bujingai is enjoyably inoffensive, and will keep you occupied for just long enough to get your money's worth out of it.

Not many, however, can say that they feature a main character based on a real-life male Japanese pop star who has, among other things, claimed he is almost 500 years old and has psychic powers.
In the 23rd Century, according to Bujingai's backstory, an attempt to create a new, cleaner source of energy ended in some sort of horrible disaster, wiping out 70% of the world's population.
In any case, the consensus seems to be that Bujingai is a bit flawed, but still a very fun action-oriented title that certainly has a unique sense of style all its own, and some absolutely killer swordplay and awe-inspiring wire-fu.
