Bukit Panjang LRT Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bukit Panjang Light Rapid Transit is a 7.8 km light rail line opened in 1999.
The poor operation was partly why the operation of the Sengkang LRT Line and Punggol LRT Line were awarded to rival company SBS Transit and rival manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
It was also reported that residents were unhappy with the withdrawal of feeder bus services operating in the area since the opening of the Bukit Panjang LRT, and were further aggravated by the unreliability of the service.

SMRT had been preparing to welcome its 60 millionth passenger on the LRT this month with a set of five limited edition ez-link cards worth $500, to show its appreciation to commuters for using the line through the ‘challenging times in the earlier years’.
LRT stations were invariably farther away from commuters’ homes than the old bus stops, so many people had to walk more to get to the stations (plus climb the stairs if they couldn’t get into the lift).
This is as if the Bukit Panjang commuters were all gadget freaks who just bought this horrendously expensive thingamajig for the kitchen or as a home entertainment system.

Light Rapid Transit (Singapore) - The Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The Light Rapid Transit (LRT) is the light rail component of Singapore's rail network, consisting of localised rail systems acting as feeder servies to the Mass Rapid Transit network.
Because of these, Singapore's LRT system is sometimes considered to be a people mover system, rather than a light rail system, which uses traditional track systems and are usually street-running.
One thing to note is that these LRT cars are the first vehicles in Singapore to be driverless, also meaning that kids are able to sit upfront in the driver's cab (if there were any) and pretend to drive the train.

For those of you who think that residents in Bukit Panjang were upset by the inconvenience, I have been told that it is not the case.
My theory is that the LRT was designed as a secret training ground for LRT bus drivers, to test their ability to deploy bus routes on very short notice.
It is a stroke of genius, because now, when there is a new license for another bus company, the LRT folks can apply for it on the basis of their bus expertise.
