When Bukittinggi is mentioned under the name Fort de Kock in old travel stories and introductions to Sumatra and the Padang highlands, it is portrayed as the seat of a Resident, a marketplace, and a health resort for the army because of the cool, mild climate.

It is a crater lake about 40 km from Bukittinggi.
To get there is quite impressive because the road from Bukittinggi first goes up to Matur from where it twist and turns down through 44 hairpins with spectacular views over the lake.
It is also possible to walk down from Matur or Lawang to the lake but that is a heavy steep trial and very slippery in the wet season.

When we arrived in Bukittinggi at 5 AM it was still dark and very misty.
Nothing at all was open except for the mosques from which you could hear the wailing and moaning of various Muslims.
This is exactly what I came to Bukittinggi for so I signed up for a 10 day trek to leave on Monday (although I should have shopped around for a better guide because Marwan turned out to be real loser).

My destination is Bukittinggi ("High Hill"), a hilltown about 60 miles away, in the West Sumatran highlands at a relatively-cool 3000 feet above sea level.
On the way to Danau Maninjao, we made side trips to the Sianok Canyon (a deep, scenic canyon on the outskirts of Bukittinggi); a village of silver craftsmen (Koto Gadang); and a settlement where the villagers produce brown sugar (Saka Lawang).
We got back to Bukittinggi at around 3pm, and I had lunch at the Canyon Restaurant: spaghetti bolognese and avocado salad.
