Bulerias Flamenco Dance Class in Jerez de la Frontera
The lessons I took from Simon were not just dance lessons, they were great lessons of the people of Jerez and their flamenco culture.
I will never forget sitting in a local working man's bar in Jerez listening to a stout old man sing alegrias, bulerias, and fandangos to the wonderful sounds Simon made with his guitar.

As a supplement to the Academy courses, I have produced a collection of guitar falsetas for the toques of Bulerias, Soleares, Siguiriyas, and Alegrias.
Included with the above is a collection of fifty Bulerias falsetas on videotape; this includes most of the Bulerias falsetas in the audio collection.
The following Collection of Bulerias Falsetas are included in the Falseta Collections from the Academy of Flamenco Guitar described below.

The falsetas in the Bulerias Audio Examples are of both types, and sometimes mixtures of both 3/4 and/or 6/8 phrasing and Jaleo forms.
Transitions between the Bulerias Chording compas and Jaleo can be expressed by adjusting the measures to provide a 1/8 entry measure and a 2/8 exit measure (resolution phrase on count 10 and 11), expressing the Jaleo phrasing while keeping the counting consistent.
Count 10, as always, is felt as a "cue" or "pivot point" for the subsequent Bulerias falseta; for Jaleo wait two counts (11 and 12) to begin on count 1.

 Bulerias
A bulerias is a fast flamenco rhythm in 12 beats with emphasis in two general forms as follows:
When performed, the buleria usually starts on beat twelve of the compas, so the accented beat is heard first.
It is played at about 240 beats per minute, most commonly in an A-phrygian mode, with a sharpened third to make A major the root chord.

This usually takes some practice, some people even practice while walking, or climbing stairs, using steps as counts.
When you got it, try a faster pace; the tempo of a bulerias can be anything up to 300 beats per minute.
Finally add some half-beats in between (ask a friend to mark the basic 'compás', as it is called).

These materials will then be used by the dancers in the next class to understand how to incorporate them with the singing and guitar.
The workshop explores different styles and ways of approaching Bulerias, such as, an impromptu fiesta or juerga, or a more formal stage setting.
The fin de fiesta is a special moment at the end of a performance where singers, guitarists, and dancers come together and let it all hang out.

I used to play bulerias according to written transcriptions I had learned, hoping all the time that I was still in rhythm.
A few rehearsals ago, I nailed the bulerias palmas, and Conja turned to me and said, "That was good!" I was floating on air.
This is a form that, like bulerias, is based on the somber soleares, and it is in between soleares and bulerias in tempo.

Bulerias is played today in 12/4 time, and has been for 100 years when the 3/4 time Bulerias was overlaid with the 12/4 Soleares.
Also what work del Gastor does is very choppy, continually dropping beats when he starts a falsetta.
