 Ground-based telescopes and observatories
The National Astronomical Observatory (NAO) - Rozhen (the Rhodopes), operated by the Institute of Astronomy (IA), Bulgarian Academy of Sciences disposes with a 2-meter Ritchey-Chretien-Coude (RCC) telescope, a 50/70 cm Schmidt, and a 60 cm Cassegrain telescope.
The Nançay Radio Observatory is a scientific department (the Unité Scientifique de Nançay) of the Observatoire de Paris, and it is also associated to the CNRS (the French National Scientific Research Centre).
The Observatory is located on the southwest ridge of the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, AZ.

 John Vincent Atanasoff
The Bulgarian National Astronomic Observatory at Rozhen discovers an asteroïd near Mars and names it the Atanasoff.
Ellis island officials had changed their Bulgarian name of Atanasov into Atanasoff when the thirteen year old Ivan (John Vincent's grandfather) had arrived in the United States in 1889.
Mauchly spent several days at the Atanasoff home, where he was briefed extensively on the ABC and saw it demonstrated.

Institute of Astronomy, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IA-BAS) was established in 1995 as a successor of the Section of Astronomy and National Astronomical Observatory (SA with NAO, BAS).
The main activity topic of the Institute of Astronomy is to carry out foundamental research in astronomy and astrophysics and teaching specialists in this domain.
Academician Nikola Bonev was the founder and first director of SA, the first collaborator was senior research fellow Dr. Malina Popova.

Named in honor of former director Luiz Muniz Barreto of the National Observatory in Rio de Janeiro, who stimulated the development of astrophysics in Brazil and was responsible for the creation in Itajubà of the Laboratorio Nacional de Astrofisica.
This minor planet, named on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the University of Sofia, of wich he is considered the patron, is testament to Ohridski’s influence on Bulgarian science and culture.
Named in honor of Elisabeth Völk (1946-), secretary at the European Southern Observatory’s headquarters in Garching, where she is chiefly responsible for the administration of the ESO Schmidt plates.

This is the reason building the national astronomic observatory in Rozhen in 1981.
The Rhodope Mountains have the most favourable climate of all Bulgarian mountains, having the least number of days with strong wind and fog.

In 2000 they investigated the possibility of using PISCO with the 2-meter telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences at Rozhen (Bulgaria).
In November 2003, PISCO and the intensified CCD camera of Nice University (France) were successfully installed at the Cassegrain focus of the Zeiss telescope under the supervision of J.L. Prieur and L.
A group of European astronomers involved in the study of binary stars (from Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Italy, and Poland) were very disappointed by such a situation and decided to look for a new host telescope on which PISCO could be mounted and operated at regular times throughout the year.

 Belogradchik Observatory Home Page
The Belogradchik Observatory together with the Rozhen National Observatory are both observational stations of the Institute of Astronomy, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The automatic 60 cm telescope at the Belogradchik Observatory is suitable for searching and detecting of very rapid brightness variations and for observations of stellar objects, asteroids and galaxies up to V = 13.5 mag.
It is situated in the west part of Balkan Mountain, 180 km from Sofia, near the wide-known stone phenomena to the small town of Belogradchik.

Foundation for Entrepreneurship Development partnered with R.E.D.A. and the National Observatory to the Ministry of Education on an extensive research project to identify the future training needs for the workforce in the Stara Zagora Region.
The agency prepared information materials and comprehensive presentation of Stara Zagora Region at Bulgarian Investment Forums (October 1997/98/1999), at Europe-Israel Trade & Industry Jubilee Exhibition'98 in Tel-Aviv, Israel; Trade Exhibition in Brescia, Italy, 2000; Investment forums, organized by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Padova and Bologna (1999) and Turin (2000), Italy.
Exchanges Solidarities Territoires, Paris, France and REDA had a pending application for a Phare Partnership grant for a project that resulted in the preparation, by experts, of a thorough ecological, environmental analysis of the current situation, the available resources and the potential for development of eco-tourism in the Region.
