Bulgarian citizens as well as foreigners may take Bulgarian Levs and foreign currency of up to BGN 20,000 or its foreign exchange equivalent out of the country without documentation.

This article analyzes the Bulgarian investigation into the 29 May 1999 seizure of 10g of HEU on the Bulgarian-Turkish border (see abstracts 19990470, 20000080, and 20000750 for earlier reports related to this incident).
The article notes that according to Bulgarian law, the trafficking of small quantities of uranium is not a serious offense, and a Bulgarian court later released Okzan after sentencing him to a fine of 2,000 Bulgarian lev (about $900 at the December 2000 exchange rate) and two years probation.
The Bulgarian government agreed, and the material was dispatched to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on 24 February 2000.

Sofia, March 4 (BTA) - The overall reform in the Bulgarian army is estimated at 19,700 million US dollars, covering the period for the next 19 years, Chief of General Staff of the Bulgarian Army, Colonel General Tsvetan Totomirov told a news conference at the Defence Ministry two days ago.
Following the adoption of the concept for reform in the Bulgarian Army, 1,200 million leva were targeted for its implementation this year, given a total of 33,487 million leva in 1996 budget allocations for the Defence Ministry.
According to Yuri Borisov MP of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the passage of the bill is necessary since there are no constitutional provisions on the implications of the Bulgarian language being the official one in Bulgaria.

(2) Financial statements for 1999 shall be prepared in new levs, with the exception of the 1999 Annual Report on the cash execution of the budget of the Republic of Bulgaria which shall be prepared both in new and old levs.

A first round of bank closures in May 1996 was limited to a subset of the institutions known to be weak and was therefore not sufficient to restore confidence in the banking sector.
In November 1996, an IMF mission initiated the first discussion with the Bulgarian authorities and major interest groups—including all political parties and trade unions, foreign donors, journalists, and academics—on the merits of a currency board.
The introduction of the Bulgarian currency board went smoothly and—in line with appreciating pressure on the lev before the actual shift took place—with no attempts to "test the system." In about 1,500 cash transactions, the BNB bought more than DM 3 million while selling less than DM 1,000.
