Topic: Bulletproof algorithm

  Bambooweb: Algorithms
Algorithms are essential to the way computers process information, because a computer program is essentially an algorithm that tells the computer what specific steps to perform (in what specific order) in order to carry out a specified task, such as calculating employees’ paychecks or printing students’ report cards.
Algorithms are not only implemented as computer programs, but often also by other means, such as in a biological neural network (for example, the human brain implementing arithmetic or an insect relocating food), or in electric circuits or in a mechanical device.
A divide-and-conquer algorithm reduces an instance of a problem to one or more smaller instances of the same problem (usually recursively), until the instances are small enough to be directly expressible in the programming language employed (what is 'direct' is often discretionary).

Algorithms can be implemented by computer programs, although often in restricted forms; an error in the design of an algorithm for solving a problem can lead to failures in the implementing program.
A divide-and-conquer algorithm repeatedly reduces an instance of a problem to one or more smaller instances of the same problem (usually recursively), until the instances are small enough to solve easily.

Note that a nondeterminstic algorithm does not constitute a reasonable definition of an algorithm in practice, contrary to randomized algorithms which are very reasonable in practice (and often used).
A non-deterministic algorithm can, however, be simulated by a deterministic algorithm by trying all possible choices and making sure that it doesn't get stuck prematurely in a non-terminating computation, but this is very inefficient (not bounded by a polynomial in the size of the input).
The test is not bulletproof for primality however, there exist integers n which are not prime and for which the equality in (1) will be satisfied for all integers a, thus if the algorithm does not determine that an integer is not prime we cannot conclude with certainty that it is a prime.

The computer controlled Tanks lock their cannons and rocket launchers on their enemy for a few seconds, and when enemy Tanks are calculated to be within target range, ammunition is launched, if successful, destroying their target.

However, there's a problem: for a book billed as comprehensive, there's not enough depth to actually help an implementer build an implementation of any of these protocols.
For example, the first 60 pages or so explain some basic security concepts and algorithms, and the next 25 pages cover how security protocols are applied at various OSI layers.
There's a chapter dedicated to GSM and UMTS security, and one on 802.11a/b/g security that (IMHO) pulls some punches about how bad WEP is. In a book targeted at implementation engineers, it would have been helpful for Chandra to go deeper into the reasons why we got stuck with such a crappy security implementation.
