Bullets Over Broadway is a 1994 film directed by Woody Allen.
David Shayne (John Cusack) is an idealistic young playwright newly arrived on Broadway.
As the players prepare for opening night, Shayne is soon in over his head rewriting Cheech's dialogue as his own, cheating on his partner Ellen (Mary-Louise Parker) with the show's seductive, alcoholic leading lady (Dianne Weist), and facing his leading man, a compulsive eater (Jim Broadbent), beginning an affair with Olive.

In time, Cusack's playwright falls head over heels for the pretentious theatre "star", and they carry on a love affair, all the while making plans for her big comeback to the stage.

This year, the entry is something called Bullets Over Broadway, which represents Allen's first stint behind the camera without going in front of it since 1990 (Alice).
Bullets Over Broadway is the most insightful and deliciously droll look at show business since Robert Altman skewered Hollywood in 1992's The Player.
With its legitimate issues couched in laughter, Bullets Over Broadway is a delight to experience.

One of Woody Allen's best films of the '90s, Bullets over Broadway stars John Cusack as a virtual Woody surrogate, a neurotic, Jazz Age writer whose new play sounds wooden and unrealistic to a low-level mobster (Chazz Palminteri) assigned to watch over his boss's actress-girlfriend (Jennifer Tilly).
`Bullets Over Broadway' by Woody Allen proves that one of Allen's strengths as a writer is in conceiving of implausible premises such as `Zelig', `Purple Rose of Cairo', and this movie and making them seem very real, and in building some very big jokes out of the situation.
Jennifer Tilly is about as close as you can come to a female lead playing against all the talent shown by Wiest and Ullman, but she carries of the role of a classic dumb blond moll (to mob boss Viterelli) who wants to be an actress.

Overall, Bullets Over Broadway isn’t the best film produced by Woody Allen, but it’s definitely the strongest piece he released in the Nineties.

BULLETS is an intricately written and deeply funny screenplay brought brilliantly to life both in front of and behind the camera.
He threatens to quit, but the allure of a Broadway hit is too strong for him to resist.
BULLETS is certainly one of Allen's most stylized films and he pulls off the period wonderfully from the clothes, to the sets, to the music.

As Woody Allen's "Bullets Over Broadway" opens, an earnest young playwright has finally found financing for his latest dreary exercise in social responsibility.
There's the sneaky suspicion that some of this subplot in "Bullets Over Broadway" may refer obliquely to events in the last two years in Allen's life.
"Bullets Over Broadway" shares a kinship with a more serious film by Allen, "Crimes and Misdemeanors," in which a man committed murder and was able, somehow, to almost justify it.

oody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” is the most substantive, accessible -- not to mention the funniest—film that the prolific writer-director has made in years.
Taking the travails of the artist’s life as his subject, Allen goes back to Broadway during the time of bathtub gin and flappers and a budding playwright named David Shayne (John Cusack), who is struggling to get his latest dramatic work up on the boards.
Most of “ Bullets Over Broadway” takes place backstage as Shayne and his troupe of actors prepare for their opening, and Allen’s depiction of the labor pains of creativity is as side-splitting and insightful as anything he has ever done.

This is meant as praise because, speaking as someone who can't tell his comedies from his dramas, I have never really cared for Allen's work as a general rule.

In truth, the small ensemble of Forbidden Broadway is made up of only four performers and one pianist.
One, and perhaps the only, downside to Forbidden Broadway is that some of the jokes may fly right over the heads of those who do not know much about theater and the past and present New York theatrical seasons.
Even though you might not completely be in the know about all of the humor presented during Forbidden Broadway's one-and-a-half-hour running time, you will have a good old-fashioned escapist evening just watching four people run around like loonies while lovingly making fun of everything Broadway.

In his new movie, Bullets Over Broadway, he cast the talented actress Mary Louise Parker and comedian Tracey Ullman in what amounts to cameo roles.
Released by Miramax, Bullet Over Broadway is his first independent enterprise away from Tri-Star, but you couldn't tell it from the production values of the movie, as the same collaborators (designer Santo Loquasto, cinematographer Carlo Di Palma, editor Susan Morse) are reliably behind-the-scenes, endowing the film with a beautiful as well as authentic look.
Mixing conventions of showbiz comedies with those of prohibition gangster melodramas, Bullets Over Broadway is always pleasant and intermittently entertaining.

If you thought Woody Allen had become complacent when making films recently, Bullets Over Broadway will prove you wrong.
Yes, it's set mostly in New York and has a neurotic, twitchy character, lacking in self-confidence, but Allen doesn't play that part, and this film is not so much a study of one man's neuroses, as of the interactions of different characters and the quirky and funny results of chance happenings.
His uncompromising stance is defeated when funding for the play is gained by his producer from prohibition mobster Nick Valenti, on one condition - that his girlfriend Olive Neal (Jennifer Tilly) plays a major role.

Bullets Over Broadway is a Woody Allen romp that, as the title suggests, combines gangsters with show business at the height of the Roaring Twenties.
David Shayne (John Cusack) is a straight-arrow playwright who plans to stand firm against compromising his work, but quickly abandons that stance when his producer (Jack Warden) finds a backer to mount his show on Broadway.
There's just one catch, however: the backer is a mobster (Joe Viterelli) who sees Shayne's play as a vehicle for his dizzy, talent-free girlfriend, Olive (Jennifer Tilly).
