 Frankfurt, H.G.: On Bullshit.
Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it.
By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.
Bullshit is now such a dominant feature of our culture that most of us are confident we can recognize and rebuff it.

 The Next Hurrah: Bullshit
It becomes obvious then that not all bullshit is bad, and that in fact we may not all agree what bullshit is. If you are alone, penniless, without shelter, food or water, then the high-minded studies of a scientist or philosopher really are meaningless bullshit.
It seems to me that your definition of bullshit is another way to describe this reality-creation, and that a lot of the discussion on the leftward blogs for the past several years has circled around whether the Busheviks knew that their contrived reality was bullshit, or if they actually believed it.
Bullshit in that sense is an attempt to evade and obfuscate.

 bullshit!
And speaking of "bullshit", in yesterday's e-mail, we received the regular openDemocracy newsletter (a good one to subscribe to), wherein they make an apology of sorts for having delved into the murky world of bullshit - in a previous issue of their Internet postings.
Bullshit, along with chickenshittedness, have always been of concern hereabouts, particularly due to the Cheney-Bush White House neocon Election 2000, 9/11 and Iraq war advent, which started, as did these pages, on December 13, 2000.
Bullshitting aims at the formation of trustworthiness, as Eric Ambler's character in Dirty Story discovered at an early stage in life: "One of the first things my father taught me was, Never tell a lie when you can bullshit your way through".

If, instead, she said, "Bush's war is bullshit", and that were broadcast, every station carrying it and the speaker herself could be fined per utterance, per station.
The newsmakers who want to call bullshit, and the journalists who ought to call bullshit, and the broadcasters who think that stopping them out of fear is bullshit should take on the FCC and the archaic and unconstitutional law that makes them think they should save us from a simple word.

FCC bans bullshit but not ni**er!” — the n-word and other racial epithets bothers me more than vulgarity, too (emotion!) but arguably (reason) racial epithets are more closely related to *political speech* than simply saying bullshit, tits, or even semprini.

 Bullshit parallels (kottke.org)
The essence of bullshit, Frankfurt decides, is that it is produced without any concern for the truth.
But this does not mean that he necessarily gets them wrong." The bullshitter's fakery consists not in misrepresenting a state of affairs but in concealing his own indifference to the truth of what he says.
And that, Frankfurt says, is what makes bullshit so dangerous: it unfits a person for telling the truth.

Defining bullshit. By Timothy Noah - Slate Magazine
It is possible to bullshit somebody, but it is not possible to poppycock, or to twaddle, or to horseshit anyone.
In this respect the word "bullshit" is identical to the word "lie," for when we speak of a lie we speak, implicitly, of the action that brought the lie into being: Somebody lied.
Bullshit, Frankfurt notes, is an inevitable byproduct of public life, "where people are frequently impelled—whether by their own propensities or by the demands of others—to speak extensively about matters of which they are to some degree ignorant." But politics is not a creation of the modern era; it's been around for centuries.

Bullshit == lie, but the one making the claim is too much of a chicken to raise the level of the insult.
If bullshit is the result of no longer caring about the truth, then chickenshit is what happens when one when one can no longer get it up even to try to be convincing, when one loses one's feeling for the game of communication entirely, and simply goes through the motions.
Those in power are forcing their bullshit down our throat, but, their ability to do so is a direct consequence of the "left" where left means this whole paradigm, relativity, self esteem, neo marxist, deconstructionist, blah blah blahist, bullshit that now passes for a college education in much of the social sciences and humanities.

Bullshitting, as he notes, is not exactly lying, and bullshit remains bullshit whether it's true or false.
The difference lies in the bullshitter's complete disregard for whether what he's saying corresponds to facts in the physical world: he "does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and oppose himself to it.
Instead, he points to one source of bullshit's unprecedented expansion in recent years, the postmodern skepticism of objective truth in favor of sincerity, or as he defines it, staying true to subjective experience.

We discovered the answer to that question in the basement of an Ohio police headquarters, where Frey & Co. failed to expunge the single remaining document that provides a contemporaneous account of his watershed felonious spree.
