After a group of students sang a couple of gospel hymns that moved some in the audience to tears, Mohammed Mubarak, a 51-year-old former Black Panther member and friend of Huggins and Carter at the time of their death, expressed his appreciation for the turnout of the remembrance.

Although philosophical differences were the primary source of the US-Panther discord, Brown refers to a 1968 article that stated that Karenga secretly met with police as well as California Gov. Ronald Reagan after Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination and that those meetings increased the tension.
Afterward, Brown says, "a taxing combination of the threat of retaliation from the Black Panther Party alongside police and FBI surveillance, disruption and attacks" marked the group's decline as it descended into paranoia and militarization.

It is clear that a member of Us organization killed Carter and Huggins (who was armed) in a shoot-out where Us members were also wounded; however, it is just as clear that members of the Black Panther Party (BPP) killed innocents, though one is vilified and the other celebrated.
