German Federal Police - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bundespolizei (or BPOL) is the federal police force of Germany.
The Bundespolizei was previously known as the Bundesgrenzschutz (BGS) ("Federal Border Protection") until July 1st, 2005 when the law renaming the BGS as the BPOL was enacted.
The BPOL conducts criminal investigations only within their jurisdiction; otherwise the cases are referred to the appropriate state police force or to the federal criminal investigative agency, the Federal Criminal Police Office (Germany).

The Federal Police of Germany (and thus the GSG 9) is under the control of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

ISN Security Watch - German border guards become Federal Police
Germany’s paramilitary Federal Border Guard service was renamed the “Federal Police” on 27 May in order to reflect its new tasks in providing domestic security, despite resistance from critics who fear a conflation of military and law enforcement services.
Besides the responsibility for monitoring a 30-km zone along West Germany’s borders - especially its eastern frontier, the dividing line between West and East during the Cold War - the BGS had the task of preventing civil unrest and “dangerous disruptions of public order” that might compromise the security of the border.
The close relationship between border guards and the military was further underscored when, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the 1972 Olympics in Munich, West Germany decided to establish a commando force that could respond effectively to hostage-takings, hijackings, and other challenges to the state power.
