Bungay is a village of considerable antiquity, formerly dependant on Bungay Castle, supposed to have been erected by the Bigods, earls of Norfolk ; some ruins of the castle still remain.
Bungay was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1688, and the town is consequently of modern date.
Bungay has a free grammar-school, endowed with a school-house and premises and two estates, from the proceeds of which ten children are educated ; twenty-two daily schools ; two boarding-schools ; four Sunday-schools ; and one infant national-school.

The most famous event connected with St Mary's church is the apparition of the devil in the disguise of a Black Dog in 1577.
Bungay Church was damaged, the tower struck by lightening and the Church clock was broken in pieces.
There had long been a belief that a Satanic fl hound roamed the area and so it was easy to believe for people in the dark interior of the Church, that this evil beast was responsible for the catastrophe.

The origin of the name of Bungay is thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon title 'Bunincga-haye', signifying the land belongling to the tribe of Bonna, a Saxon chieftain.
Bungay Castle was built by the Normans, but was later rebuilt by Roger Bigod and his family, who also owned Framlingham Castle.
Bungay is home to both the shortest man and the tallest woman in East Anglia; Stephen Went, East Anglia's shortest man, and Mary King, the tallest woman in the south of England.

The 24th Bungay Black Dog Marathon was run for the first time from its new home on Maltings Meadow and apart from a stiff breeze on parts of the rural Waveney valley course it was the perfect weather for running.
The runners were encouraged by enthusiastic spectators as they ran through Bungay, Beccles and the villages of Gillingham and Geldeston and were cheered home by supporters waiting in the grandstand on the playing field at the finish.
The first Bungay Black Dog runner was Steve Barratt in time of 1.24.21 and the first lady was Rachel Percy in a time of 1.49.41.
