The cross-cultural tensions in Bunny Lake remain subtle throughout.
Following the discovery at her flat, Ann is pressured to prove that her daughter "exists," as the police and Steven (during off-screen conversations with interested parties who then report them to the police) insinuate that she's made up the child, a sign of her fragile mental state.
Steven lets slip that when she was young, she had an imaginary friend named Bunny, and yes, she and Steven have shared a somewhat too-close relationship.

If the title Bunny Lake is Missing means anything to you, you're either a devotee of obscure movies circa 1965 or a fan of mysteries from the late '50s.
But the heart of Bunny Lake isn't Bunny, her mother, the suspicious psychiatrist (Joachim M. Wiese), or the police lieutenant who draws the only logical conclusions he can (Sonny King).
As far as the mystery of Bunny Lake goes, of course it's the information casually tossed into a conversation that has the most importance, as well as the ability to interpret the actions of characters who are talked about but remain unseen.

notcoming.com | Bunny Lake is Missing: The Title Credits
Released only a few months after In Harm’s Way, Bunny Lake Is Missing is almost its sister film’s antithesis in Preminger’s oeuvre.
The presence of Dullea (along with the mid-60’s England setting) lends more than a little touch of Kubrick’s creepiness to the film, and the result is an unnerving psychological thriller that, even with Olivier’s kind reassurances at the end, manages to leave a nasty taste in one’s mouth.
Bunny Lake is a film that turns on the destruction of evidence, so Bass’ titles, which feature the tearing away of bits of paper to reveal the credits, precisely fit the film’s themes of concealment and revelation.
