Saint Boniface - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In 722, he felled the sacred oak dedicated to Thor near the present-day town of Fritzlar in northern Hesse, built a chapel from its wood at the site where today stands the cathedral of Fritzlar, and later established the first bishopric in Germany on a hill (Buraburg) facing the town across the [[Eder]] river.
Boniface balanced this support and attempted to maintain some independence, however, by attaining the support of the papacy and of the Agilolfing rulers of Bavaria.
After returning from his mission in Bavaria, Boniface resumed his labours in Germany, where he founded the dioceses of Würzburg, Erfurt and Buraburg.

The dioceses of Lüttuck, Cologne, Worms, Speyer, and Utrecht were first made subject to it, together with the sees of Erfurt, Buraburg, and Eichstätt, as dioceses founded by Boniface; then the Swabian dioceses of Augsburg, Strasburg, Constance, and Chur.
The dioceses of Erfurt and Buraburg, however, lapsed on the death of their first occupants, and in 798 Cologne was made a metropolitan see with Lättich and Utrecht among its suffragans (see).
With the spread of Christianity in Saxony, the dioceses of Paderborn, Halberstadt, Hildesheim, and Verden were, on their erection, added to the suffragans of Mainz, and under Archbishop Willigis the newly-created sees of Prague and Olmütz were made subject to it.

 Continental Business:  Boniface Biographies
Both von Padberg and Lutterbach are in agreement: it was a well-planned operation intended to show the Christian God as the supreme ruler.
Von Padberg's account, one of the main historical sources for Lutterbach, adds a detail that Lutterbach seems to have chosen to leave out: close-by was Buraburg, a Frankish stronghold, so Boniface probably had no reason to fear pagan retaliation.
This detail, of a Boniface employing more worldly force to reach his spiritual goals, could have added a little life to a man who sometimes seems too much consumed by petty doubts concerning his salvation.

He founded many churches, converted the heathen, expelled the anti-Roman priests, and in ten years had won a new province for the Church and the pope.
Being promoted to the dignity of archbishop, Boniface organized his Church by founding the sees of Würzburg, Buraburg, and Erfurt, and by building monasteries and nunneries, which he filled with monks and nuns from England and endowed and improved with the help of English money.
Anti-Roman influence was strong there and among the neighboring Alemanni, but, with the authorization of Gregory III, in a few years, Boniface placed men in sympathy with Rome in the sees of Regensburg, Passau, Salzburg, and Freising, and substituted the Benedictine rules for those of Columban in the monasteries.
