The History of Burano   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Burano is one of the greater centers of the lagoon of Venice, with its 7.000 inhabitants around, a flourishing activity of fishing, laces and tourism.
Today Burano is a marvelous island, a heaven that enchants the tourists, not only for the historical themes, but even for its charm, for the unreal silence of its mornings, for the happy bawling and for the peculiar local dialect, that has the characteristic to lengthen, almost to double, the consonants.
It is worth tasting, in one of the many restaurants of the island, the typical local dishes, all made with fish, among which the most appreciated for its originality is the "risotto" with "nero di seppia", or the "schie," shrimps of the lagoon that, together with "polenta", represents a unique specialty.

And, maybe, at least according to some scholars, the drawl still characterizing the sing-song dialect of Burano, is the last trace of thelanguage spoken by the ancient citizens of Altinum.Yet these peoples did not come to an entirely deserted and barren land.
However secluded, distant and off-the-beaten-path as it may appear today, Burano has always been closely connected to Venice, whose glorious past it has shared in good and bad times - it was occupied by French troops and then by the Austrians, and contributed its own heroes to the ill-fated 1848 revolution led by Daniele Manin.
The Burano houses have their distant origin in the ancient lagoon casoni, or fishing lodges, buildings made of reeds and mud with thatched roofs, generally with a square plan, and no more than two or three-storey high.
