Burdekin River, November 2005, taken from the Burdekin Bridge (Bruce Highway)
The Burdekin River in Queensland, Australia rises on the western slope of the Seaview Range and flows into the Pacific Ocean at Upstart Bay.
The river was discovered by the expedition led by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845 and named for Mrs.

AIMS Research - Burdekin River Plume Modelling - CRC
Rivers collect the freshwater runoff from the land and deliver it to the sea at the coast.
In particular, the project is focussing on simulating all the floods of the Burdekin River for the 30 year period 1966-1995.
The 30-year historical simulation of the discharge and dilution of Burdekin River runoff was undertaken to broaden the understanding of the spatial extents of likely impacts on the reefs and coastal waters of the CGBR from catchment management practices.

Flood Warning System for the Burdekin River
Two main tributaries drain the catchment, the Burdekin River flowing from the north and the Belyando from the south, which join at the Burdekin Falls Dam.
Historical flood heights for all river stations in the Burdekin River Floodwarning network, as shown on the map, are available from the Bureau of Meteorology upon request.
At each flood warning river height station, the severity of flooding is described as minor, moderate or major according to the effects caused in the local area or in nearby downstream areas.

 EES: Kathryn's PhD
When river effluent has elevated suspended sediment concentration, to the extent that its density is greater than that of the receiving marine water, a hyperpycnal (underflowing) turbidity current may form.
The highest recorded discharge of the Burdekin River (near to the mouth) was 40 393 m3s-1 on 4th March 1946 (Fielding et al., 1999).
The aim of this part of Kathryn's studies is to investigate this possibility and to use the Burdekin River as a case study for comparison with published theoretical models of quasi-steady hyperpycnal turbidity current flow.

I have never actually worked on a River Trust organisation personally, but I always, as a young solicitor, took an interest in the Burdekin River Improvement Trust Act, which of course as you all know, was the forerunner to the River Trust Acts.
And the Burdekin River Trust from my home town of Ayr led the way in all of these things, and has been going for almost 50 years now.
When I was on the Burdekin Shire Council for 11 years, we followed very closely the activities of the Burdekin River Improvement Trust.

Tropical Savannas CRC - Burdekin River Catchment Management Study (Queensland)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The Burdekin Management Study (BMS) aimed to link research, development and education activities in the upper catchment of the Burdekin River (north Queensland) to enhance integration, communication and relevance of science-based information related to grazing land management.
Initially, the study focused on achieving and communicating a multi-disciplinary overview of landscape and catchment processes in the Burdekin grazing lands and on developing spatially explicit guidelines for sustainable resource management.
With the involvement of a broad range of stakeholders in workshops and focus groups, this stage will also review existing policies, regulatory and institutional arrangements and assess the state of current knowledge of the social and economic factors that are relevant to resource sustainability in the area.

 CRC Reef Research Centre
The far field differences observed between the plume simulation and the field measurements are probably due to other rivers, such as the Haughton and Ross rivers, discharging at the same time.
Initial analysis on the model shows the main influence on the river's plume at sea is the discharge volume and local winds.
An aspect of the model simulations is that it identifies the fate of the Burdekin River plume in isolation to other river discharges which cannot be measured in the field.

 Abstract OFR141 : Publications : CRC LEME
The Eastern Highlands of Australia in central Queensland divide the coastal plains to the east and the inland lowlands and hills to the west.
With a large catchment and high erosional energy, the Burdekin River incised the Highlands and formed a conspicuous gorge and, as a result, a northerly flowing drainage was developed.
With the formation of the Burdekin Gorge, the base level of erosion for the Burdekin River was lowered rapidly, renewing erosion energy within the river system.

The coral Ba/Ca record of suspended sediment into the GBR by the Burdekin river over approximately the past 250 years.
Here we report analyses of Ba/Ca ratios in long-lived Porites coral from Havannah Reef- a site on the inner Great Barrier Reef that is influenced by flood plumes from the Burdekin river- to establish a record of sediment fluxes from about 1750 to 1998.
We find that, in the early part of the record, suspended sediment from river floods reached the inner reef area only occasionally, whereas after about 1870-following the beginning of European settlement- a five- to tenfold increase in the delivery of sediments is recorded with the highest fluxes occurring during the drought-breaking floods.
