The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder.
The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply svith the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer.
Indian Standards are reviewed periodically and revised, when necessary and am.-n dments, if any, are issued from time to time.

The Bureau of Indian Standards, the national product certification agency, invited Chloroplast to participate in the Seventh Meeting of the Plastic Piping System Sectional Committee, CED 50, Meeting as a special invitee.
The invitation was extended to Chloroplast in recognition to the proposals submitted by it on the third revision of IS : 4985, the Standards for Unplasticized PVC Pipes for Potable Water Supplies.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has permitted Chloroplast to manufacture and Mark pipes as per IS: 4985/2000 specifications after inspecting the testing installations and conducting factory tests.

The average amount of pesticide residue found in all the samples was 11.85 parts per billion (ppb) or 24 times higher than the BIS standards for total pesticides in soft drinks (0.5 ppb).
Since then, BIS has, in its sectional committee, met over 20 times to deliberate on the standards, and in October 2005 the standards were finalised.
Narain alleged that the final standards were being opposed by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on the ground that more research needed to be done.

 Govt proposes tough standards for bottled water
Based on the recommendations of the Bureau of Indian Standards, a draft notification prepared for this purpose has been circulated for public comments before carrying out the necessary amendments in the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules, Swaraj said in a statement to a calling attention motion on detection of harmful pesticides in bottled water.
The stringent standards included fixing the permissible limit of pesticides residues at 0.0001 mg per litre individually and 0.0005 mg per litre collectively in line with international standards, she said.
It is on the basis of the NoC that the manufacturers can obtain licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards and PFA authorities, she added.
