The Climate Group within the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre aims to document, explain and simulate the causes of major fluctuations and changes of the Australian climate, develop methods to monitor and predict climate variations, and investigate the impacts of climate variations on Australia.
Part of the network was transferred to the Bureau of Meteorology in 1996 to establish an operational framework and secure funding for the future.
The Bureau of Meteorology is also seen as the most reliable supplier of long-term climate information by a majority of producers.

 The History of Meteorology in SA
Following the advent of Federation (January 1, 1901), meteorology became the responsibility of the Commonwealth (Meteorology Act) and the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology was created as a part of the Department of the Interior in 1907.
The station was transferred from the Department of Defence to the Bureau of Meteorology in 1972 and, because of its association with Woomera, was and is still administered from Adelaide.
Todd eminently gave a lucid summary of the status of meteorology in Australia and New Zealand in his 1893 address in Adelaide to the 5th meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science (Todd 1894).

 Flood Warning System for the Barron River
The Barron River ALERT flood warning system was installed in 1995 as a cooperative project between the Bureau of Meteorology, the City of Cairns and Cairns Port Authority.
Historical flood heights for all river stations in the Barron River Floodwarning network, as shown on the map, are available from the Bureau of Meteorology upon request.
At each flood warning river height station, the severity of flooding is described as minor, moderate or major according to the effects caused in the local area or in nearby downstream areas.
