  War, just
War was a judicial action in which the people fighting were, in one way or another, righting a wrong.
The warring parties even tried to recast their actions as a crusade, so that they could be morally certain of waging a proper war.
During most of the Medieval period, war between the international nobility was insulated from the brutalising effects of total war.

Burgundian Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Open war broke out in 1474, and in the following years, the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, was defeated thrice on the battlefield and killed in the Battle of Nancy.
The Duchy of Burgundy and several other Burgundian lands then became part of France, while the Burgundian lands in the Netherlands and the Franche Comté were inherited by Charles's daughter, and eventually passed to the House of Habsburg.
The Franche-Comté initially also became French, but was ceded to Maximilian's son Philip in 1493 by the French king Charles VIII in the treaty of Senlis, in an attempt to bribe the Emperor to remain neutral during Charles's planned invasion of Italy.

myArmoury.com: The Burgundian Army of Charles the Bold
They were the first army to be placed on a largely regular footing, contained numbers of specialist mercenaries, made large-scale use of both artillery and hand firearms, and Charles' military Ordinances, demanding strict discipline and, another innovation, regular drilling and exercising of the troops, became the basis for those of many 16th Century armies.
Burgundian feudal levies still remained, and Charles hired various mercenaries: apart from the English longbows mentioned, there were French men-at-arms, German hand-gunners, and large numbers of Italians (including Savoyards—Savoy being at first an ally and later almost a satellite of Burgundy).
As might be expected in this early period, figures for the overall strength of the Burgundian army are rather conflicting, but shortly before the disastrous defeat of Morat, 1476, his army consisted of: 1,741 men-at-arms (including 500 of the Household); 4,062 mounted archers (including 1,377 English; probably also mounted crossbowmen); and 4,445 infantry: 10,248 total.

The roots of the wars lie in the unquenchable desires of Charles the Bold (or Rash), Duke of Burgundy, for glory, riches, empire, and kingship.
The Burgundian Ordonnance army is one of the finest amalgamations of mercenary professional troops in the 15th Century.
In fact, one could argue that the Burgundian army was the first to truly use "field" artillery in battle with its light and medium bombards fitted on wheeled carriages.

War and Government in the French Provinces - Cambridge University Press   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Few studies of the history of provincial France have hitherto spanned the conventional medieval/early-modern divide, and David Potter's detailed examination of war and government in Picardy, a region of France hitherto neglected by historians, has much to say about the development of French absolutism.
Picardy emerged as a province after the campaigns of 1470-1477, and its experience of the first period of absolutism provides an enlightening contrast with that of other, more outlying provinces: the Picard nobility was notable for the extent of its participation in the army, the court and the government of France.
David Potter provides a detailed analysis of the organisation of French military power in the province, and its impact during the period of the Habsburg-Valois wars.
