This Regiment was originally organized for 12 months service in June 1861 under the designation of the 6th North Carolina Volunteers with a strength of about 1200 men.
The Regiment was formed at Raleigh, North Carolina with company members being from Burke County, North Carolina.
They were to become known as "Burke Tigers." On November 14, 1861, by special order #222 it was redesignated the 16th North Carolina Infantry Regiment.
