 Burke County, NC - Archaeology & Historic Preservation Fact Sheet
The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office worked with the Historic Burke Foundation to coordinate archaeological excavations at Quaker Meadows and administered an archaeological survey of the Catawba River floodplain in conjunction with the city of Morganton.
Burke County sponsored a comprehensive survey of architectural resources funded in part by a federal grant.
The Historic Preservation Office assisted Burke County in publishing the results of the architectural survey in Historic Burke: An Architectural Inventory of Burke County, North Carolina in 1987, which received the Antoinette Forrester Downing Award from the Society of Architectural Historians.

 Burke County Courthouse
County History: The land that would form Burke County was ceded to the English by the Creeks in the Treaty of Savannah on May 21, 1733, confirmed and expanded by agreements of 1735 and 1736.
IV of that document transformed the existing colonial parishes into seven counties, with Indian ceded lands forming an eighth county.
Between 1793 and 1905, the legislature took land from Burke County to help form the new counties of Screven (1793), Jefferson (1796), and Jenkins (1905), and to add area to Richmond County (1841).

Judge Burke was born in San Francisco in 1932.
Judge Reginald Saunders, a former prosecutor, said Judge Burke "was an intimidating sort of character as a judge" and didn't shy away from grilling deputy district attorneys.
In addition to his wife, Judge Burke is survived by two daughters, Terese Burke Klas of Placerville and Mary Ann Rodriggs of Fremont; two sons, John F. Burke of San Francisco and Timothy F. Burke of Davis; and 11 grandchildren.
