L'ordre des Burkholderiales a été proposé dans la deuxième édition du "Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology" et cette nomenclature sera validement publiée en janvier 2006 par citation sur la liste de validation 107.
L'ordre des Burkholderiales est placé dans la classe des ¤ Betaproteobacteria (phylum des ¤ "Proteobacteria", domaine ou empire des "Bacteria" ou des "Eubacteria").
Les genres Mitsuaria et Paucibacter sont des genres incertae sedis de l'ordre des Burkholderiales.
