The tobacco marketing assessment was announced on December 16, 1996 at.8105 cent per pound for each the producer and purchaser of 1997-crop flue-cured tobacco.
In the same year, the central region, around Lilongwe, produced 81,680 tons of tobacco, over 67 percent of the of total flue-cured and burley tobacco produced in Malawi, and the southern region produced 23,120 tons of tobacco, 19 percent of the total flue-cured and burley tobacco produced in Malawi.
Most of the tobacco exports in 1996, 80 percent or 82,000 tons, were of burley tobacco.

Ventilators are not needed at the ends of burley barns unless prevailing winds strike the end of the barn and tier rails run parallel with the width.
The final quality of cured tobacco is determined very largely by moisture conditions which prevail inside the tobacco barn during the curing period.
Burley cures favorably when the temperature inside the barn ranges between 60 degrees and 90 degrees F, provided the relative humidity averages 65 to 70 per cent in the barn over a 24-hour period.

Enough Pennsylvania growers have planted burley tobacco — a key ingredient in cigarettes — that it may stem the state's long slide in tobacco production, a window that opened last year with the lifting of the decades-old federal quota system.
Much of Pennsylvania's tobacco is planted in Lancaster County, where large Amish and Mennonite families can muster the farmhands necessary for the labor-intensive burley tobacco harvest, and more cheaply than hired labor.
About 2,400 acres of burley tobacco have been planted in the state this year out of a total of 5,200 acres of tobacco, according to agricultural projections released March 1.

Though burley is generally known as a mountain tobacco, the N.C. State effort will install curing structures and research plots at research stations near Whiteville, Kinston, Rocky Mount and Reidsville - far to the east of the plant's usual environs.

The China National Tobacco Import Export Group Corporation of the Peoples Republic of China has signed the contract sealing the sale, which is the first tobacco from the U.S. to be sold to China since the country lifted its 11-year ban.
Following this meeting, Senator McConnell, along with members of the Burley Tobacco Growers Co-op and the Kentucky Farm Bureau, had several additional meetings with Chinese officials to discuss the high quality of burley tobacco grown in Kentucky and the potential benefits of tobacco sales from the U.S. to China.
Burley Co-op CEO Danny McKinney and President Henry West also visited China and they have hosted several visits of Chinese officials.

In past years, the wealth generated by Zimbabwean leaf tobacco marketing and production has helped improve the quality and standard of life in the country, but merchants are now shifting their attention to tobacco-growing competitors such as Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania, all of which are taking steps to increase their leaf production.
