Later Burlingame and Topeka joined hands and cut off some ten miles of southern Shawnee county and added it to what is now Osage county, extending Shawnee county a number of miles north of the Kansas river.
Burlingame was on the Old Santa Fe Trail and the Yeager and Anderson gangs were a constant menace and cause of uneasiness.
The City of Burlingame is situated in the center of a coal field some thirty miles long and five miles wide which provides work for about six hundred men about six months each year at a wage from five to six dollars a day when working full time.

Kansas was granted statehood in 1861, becoming the 34th state in the US.
This prominent hill, which is south of the Kansas River, served as a landmark for travelers on their way to the Santa Fe Trail along the 1846 military road from Fort Leavenworth.
The Kansa Indians were to have gone to Council Grove to meet with the commissioners immediately following the Osage Treaty, but they failed to arrive in time and had to follow them down the trail.
